Water Resource Platforms
Water scarcity is an increasing concern for many governments in developing countries. They face challenges in managing water resources to safely deliver the water needed to fuel growth, as well as for humans and the environment. This concept note proposes to work with three global Water Resources platforms (WRG, WEF, 3GI) to incorporate perspectives from the private sector and economic growth into the water dialogue. In addition, the private sector is concerned to use water more efficiently and to bring in its know-how in the water sector.

- Water Resource Group (WRG); a public-private-civil society partner-ship that helps government water officials and other water sector specialists accelerate reforms to ensure sustainable water resource management for the long-term development and economic growth of their country. WRG is hosted by the IFC. SDC is a cofounder of this organization. Global Green Growth Institute (3GI); Created by the government of South Korea in 2010 (in the process of becoming an international organisation). The purpose of 3GI is to support and diffuse a new paradigm of growth, “green growth” that targets key aspects of economy (poverty reduction, job creation) while also increasing environmental sustainability (climate change, biodiversity loss and security of access to clean energy and water). World Economic Forum (WEF), prompted by its private sector partners, started a Water Initiative six years ago. Among other achievements, it gave birth to the WRG. SDC has been an important partner of this Initiative. In 2012/13, the WEF is designing a second generation of its Water Initiative.

Hintergrund |
There is an emerging gap between safe freshwater availability and water demand in many developing and fast-growing economies around the world. The economic, environmental, social and political challenges that this gap presents to governments is serious. The three platforms address these challenges by providing expert analysis, identifying best practices, promoting public-private partnerships, and advising in the development of national policies and programs. Prior experience working with the World Economic Forum (WEF) has shown that being involved in these platforms enables SDC to influence the private sector and heighten attention to the social, ecological and human rights aspects in these initiatives. In this project proposal, the SDC Water Initiatives Division combines three key platforms: The Water Resource Group (IFC), The Global Green Growth Institute (3GI) and the WEF Water Initiative. |
