Water Resource Platforms

Water scarcity is an increasing concern for many governments in developing countries. They face challenges in managing water resources to safely deliver the water needed to fuel growth, as well as for humans and the environment.

This project proposes to consolidate its work with three global Water Resources Platforms, namely the Water Resources Group (2030 WRG), the World Economic Forum (WEF) Water Initiative, and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), to incorporate perspectives from the private sector and economic growth into the water dialogue. In addition, the private sector is concerned to use water more efficiently and to bring in its know-how into the water sector.

Hintergrund

There is an emerging gap between safe freshwater avaiablility and water demand in many developing and fast growing economies around the world. Water has been highlighted as the third Global Risk by the World Economic Form. The economic, environmental, social and political challenges that this gap presents to governements is serious. The three platformes have sucessfully adressed these challenges by bringing together different stakeholders, providing expert analysis, identifying best practices, promoting public-private partnerships and advising in developement of national policies and programs.The experience of the first phase of this project has shown that being involved in these initiatives and organisations enables the SDC to influence the privat sector and heighten the attention to the social, ecologiocal and human rights aspects. The SDC combines three key platforms: 2030 WRG, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGGI), and the WEF Water Initiative.

Ziele

The overall goal is to reduce water scarcity by enabeling governments in developing countries to manage water resources such as to safely deliver the water needed for human beings, the environment, as well as for economic growth (i.e. the private sector).

The SDC influences the private sector in its growing participation in the water dialogue and includes it into the water debate.

Resultate

Resultate von früheren Phasen:  

The first phase of supporting the three platforms has shown that the SDC has an important influence on the platforms and that the work with the private sector to leverage their concern and comittment in Water Management has been successful. Concretely:

A) The 2030 WRG has built up Multistakeholder Processes (platforms) in South Africa, Mongolia, Peru, India Karnataka and Maharastra and has concentrated its efforts on developing new instruments and models to analyze how to invest in a more efficient way in the water sector.

B) GGGI has mainstreamed water in the organisation by defining its own theory of change in the conjunction of water-green growth. GGGI has established effective program information-sharing and program complementarity with key donors and in discussions with 2030 WRG in Peru. In the Mekong Region, GGGI secured committed engagement with the Vietnam Mekong River Committee to explore water resource use options.

C) The handover of the 2030 WRG to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has been sucessful. The WEF is reducing its support beginning Jul 2014. WEF and SDC are exploring a new collaboration on Water and Mining.
