Guinée, crise Ebola : achat de matériel de protection pour opération conjointe

Projekt abgeschlossen

The current Ebola outbreak across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone has surpassed all other outbreaks in terms of cases, deaths and geographic spread. The Guinean Ministry of Health (MoH) requested partners to urgently provide protection equipment to its medical staff. The current Ebola outbreak has the potential to spread outside the affected countries and beyond the region if urgent and relevant containing measures are not put in place.

Hintergrund

The scale of the ongoing Ebola outbreak is unprecedented with reports of over 17’900 cases and 6’300 deaths in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia since March 2014 – let alone 1’498 deaths for 2’292 reported cases in Guinea. This is the first time that an Ebola outbreak affects West Africa. And for the first time the Ebola virus is circulating in both urban and rural communities.

The current outbreak reached unprecedented levels, which can be linked to several challenges faced by affected countries: fragility of the health systems, inexperience and misperceptions with Ebola outbreaks, high mobility of populations and urban infection.

At present, the national health system in Guinea is trying to cope with the epidemic, and has requested in-kind support to provision health centres with medical goods. Several ETUs have been built in “Guinée forestière” and their operators are in need of in-kind support to allow the staff to work in safe conditions.
