El Niño – helping the people of Lesotho withstand the challenges of climate change

El Niño signifies unprecedented climate catastrophe for the countries of southern Africa. The drought has destroyed millions of hectares of farmland and the population of an entire region faces the threat of food insecurity. Lesotho was the first country to raise the alarm. The SDC has released a million Swiss francs to support the operations of the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) which also benefits from the provision of Swiss experts.

The SDC’s Skills for Life pilot project teaches vocational skills to refugees and residents of Kakuma, to enable them to work and earn a living. More than 580 young people were trained in phase one of this project, which was launched in 2013. Phase two began in summer 2016.

Identifying where animals have come from and recording information about their health is essential in modern agriculture to prevent the spread of diseases and stop products from diseased animals reaching the market. A system to ensure traceability will help to improve the incomes of farmers in the South Caucasus by increasing both herd productivity and the producers’ access to markets.

Gender-based violence has been on the rise in Mongolia since the turn of the millennium. Yet because of a serious lack of data, the extent of the phenomenon is difficult to assess and a culture of impunity continues to hold sway.  The SDC plans to conduct a national survey to address this problem.  At the same time, it intends to strengthen institutions, put in place appropriate services and raise public awareness.

Switzerland donates ambulances to Syria's suffering population

The SDC has delivered twelve new ambulances to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC). A Swiss delegation accompanied the delivery in the Syrian capital Damascus. The ambulances are urgently needed in Syria because the country's health system has too few ambulances to cope with the enormous number of victims caused by the war, including attacks against hospitals.

Switzerland’s support to UNHCR operations in Iraq

Iraq has been battling with conflict since 2003 and the humanitarian situation has deteriorated since late 2013. The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in 3.3 million internally displaced persons across Iraq and has left 10 million in need of humanitarian assistance. The country also hosts more than 250,000 Syrian refugees, who have fled atrocities in their homeland. Beside the provision of Swiss experts, the SDC has allocated for 2016 CHF 1.5 million to UNHCR in Iraq.

UN support for unfettered access to the victims of the crisis in Ukraine

In the face of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, millions of people are still without water and medicines. Humanitarian organisations on the ground are confronted with numerous obstacles in delivering aid. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is trying to find solutions. The SDC puts cash and experts at the disposal of OCHA and at the same time benefits from its services when conducting Swiss humanitarian operations.

The project applies the water footprint (WFP) indicator to monitor and improve water use and to reduce the impacts of the business sector. Companies in Colombia have endorsed a corporate social and environmental responsibility plan that includes steps to improve their water management. Additionally, a multi-sector approach is used for the application of the WFP in Porce river watershed.

Solidarit’eau suisse is helping fund projects to improve access to clean drinking water in developing countries. Initiated by the SDC, this internet platform enables communes and other local authorities in Switzerland to consult the list of projects and, if they want to become more involved, make contact with partners abroad.
