Head of the FDFA Didier Burkhalter visited the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan, where he officially opened a water supply system funded by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation. The system will provide some 35,000 Syrian refugees with direct access to drinking water.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter opened the 34th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday 27 February 2017. He stressed that “human rights are a joint response to a harsher, more uncertain world.” Mr Burkhalter also held several bilateral meetings.

This year's 97th edition of the Comptoir Suisse national fair in Lausanne will include an exhibition by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Unveiled for the first time in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, the exhibition invites visitors to tour the cultural universe of six development cooperation projects that the SDC is implementing around the world. The theme is food security with a focus on the conditions for agricultural production for smallholder farmers. The exhibition also highlights education in rural areas.

Migration seen as enrichment through the lenses of five photographers

An image is worth a thousand words. The SDC asked people who are going through the experience of migration to show through images the benefits it brings. More than 250 people from all around the world took part in the global photographic competition "The Other Side of Migration". The winners tell the stories behind these unique photographs.

Climate Change: Effectiveness Report 2014

The SDC and SECO regularly analyse the impact of their measures in selected thematic areas in the form of effectiveness reports. This English-language short film presents the range and scope of SDC/SECO development cooperation projects in the area of climate change during the period 2000–2012 and the results they achieved. The video complements the official report published in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Can we feed the world?

Over the next 30 years, the world’s population is set to increase from 7 to around 9 billion people. More than 800 million people go hungry today. Three quarters of them live in rural areas and largely depend on farming for their livelihood. At the same time, food prices are rising, which has a particularly negative impact on people living in poverty in food-importing countries. Global changes in food production and distribution are necessary.

"Today’s reality of smallholder farms“

Through the story of the Traoré family in West Africa, the film provides an insight into the life of smallholder farmers in developing countries. The film shows that poorly functioning markets, insufficient opportunities for education, training and information, the effects of climate change, and poor access to land and water prevent family farms from realising their full potential.
