Impact evaluations are based on scientific quantitative methods. The SDC also uses impact evaluations in analysing the effectiveness of its programmes and projects.
Impact evaluations show the causal relationships between development interventions and their impact. They allow to exlude external factors which might influence the project or program effectiveness. The findings and supporting evidence can then be used as a basis for strategic and policy decisions and for initiating or adapting programmes.
The SDC intends to expand its use of impact evaluations in Swiss development cooperation at various levels:
Increasingly conduct impact evaluations within the SDC
Use the findings of other impact evaluations from around the world where these are of relevance to the SDC
Promote knowledge and implementation of impact evaluations in Swiss NGOs (e.g. Impact Award in collaboration with ETH NADEL)
