International cooperation under the sign of the war against Ukraine
The year 2022 was replete with major challenges: climate disasters, the war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as energy and food crises. Switzerland's engagement made an important contribution to efforts to overcome these pressing issues. The Swiss International Cooperation – Annual Report 2022 has compiled the key stories, facts and figures from this year.
The war of aggression against Ukraine has created enormous challenges for the people living there as well as the entire world. Switzerland responded immediately to the outbreak of the war by providing effective aid targeting food security, water, healthcare and protection needs.
The situation was further compounded by the continuing global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency, rising energy prices, food shortages and inflation. Because of these multiple crises, international cooperation efforts have needed to be flexible in order to adapt quickly to the rapidly changing context. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) have a variety of instruments and structures they can use depending on the different needs.
Even when dealing with acute crises, Switzerland does not lose sight of long-term goals such as sustainable development, and has continued to this end to successfully implement a number of programmes in education, good governance and economic development, which in turn help improve prospects for local people and make states more resilient.
The annual report sets out examples of how Switzerland helps to solve local, regional and global problems all over the world, in the short, medium and long term. The digital edition includes an overview of SDC and SECO activities in 2022 as well as images and statements from people directly affected by these challenges. It also illustrates the work carried out by partner organisations and provides key figures and results for 2022.
