International Dialogue on Migration and Development
International dialogue on migration and development (M&D) aims to engage with States and contribute to their migration governance while linking it with development concerns to impact the design of migration policies, the formulation of developmental and poverty alleviation strategies, and foster livelihood opportunities for migrants and their families. The SDC’s Global Programme on Migration and Development (GPMD), alongside other SDC units, Swiss and international actors, is well positioned to enrich the debate and enhance the M&D capacity of States by shaping key areas of this dialogue as a result of its innovative role in the Swiss Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Chairmanship in 2011.

Background |
The three main processes of the international dialogue to consider these coming years are the Global Forum on Migration and Development, under assessment in 2012, the High Level Dialogue in 2013 and the Post-2015 debate. As the M&D issue still asks for broader commitment by governments and by development stakeholders, and considering that taking stock of progress achieved is still rather challenging, there is room for improvement that Switzerland and GPMD will explore. |
Objectives |
The migrants, their families and communities feel safer, are less economically and socially vulnerable, and are empowered to take better advantage, together with their governments, of development opportunities linked to migration. |
Target groups |
|
Medium-term outcomes |
The GPMD will focus on three major outcomes in its engagement into the international dialogue,: 1. Shape a more inclusive, effective and development oriented governance of migration; 2. Strengthen the voice of development in the global dialogue on M&D and in selected organisations; 3. Ensure that migration is an issue in the international development debate and within selected development organizations |
Results |
Results from previous phases: 1. Experience in “Whole-of-government” approach (IMZ) through 2011 GFMD Chairmanship. 2. Comprehensive view on dynamics of the international dialogue on M&D and the role and positioning of governments, GMG, and CSOs. 3. More effective participation and recognition of civil society in the GFMD. 4. Relevance of articulating thematic contribution in the GFMD and the GPMD’s experiences in the field. 5. Substantial knowledge gained and innovative projects launched with selected development actors of the GMG |
