Switzerland prioritises prevention and preparedness at international conference on disaster risk reduction in Bali

Switzerland will participate in the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, the largest international conference on disaster risk reduction, in Bali, Indonesia, from 23 to 28 May 2022. Government representatives and experts from business, academia and civil society will discuss global policies to prevent disasters and emergencies. The conference will mobilise governments, the UN system and key stakeholders to step up disaster risk reduction efforts and advance the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.



Working together to seek solutions to the challenges of climate change

President Ignazio Cassis today opened the International Cooperation Forum 2022 in Geneva. Over two days, around 1,600 people from many sectors will work together to find new solutions to the problems caused by climate change and challenges facing international cooperation. The hybrid forum was launched by the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and will take place annually.


President Cassis announces further Swiss aid for people in need in Afghanistan

President of the Swiss Confederation and head of the FDFA Ignazio Cassis attended a UN conference on Afghanistan on 31 March. Humanitarian needs in Afghanistan became more acute as the winter wore on. The UN conference was therefore an opportunity to discuss further action needed to help the crisis-hit country and vulnerable communities. Switzerland intends to allocate CHF 30 million towards aid efforts in Afghanistan before the end of 2022.


Drought in Horn of Africa: Switzerland announces new funding to help people in Somalia and Ethiopia

The Horn of Africa is being ravaged by one of the worst droughts in recent history. About 10 million people in Ethiopia and Somalia – including large numbers of women, children and elderly people – are facing an existential threat caused by severe food shortages. Switzerland is gravely concerned about the current drought in the region and has allocated CHF 10.8 million to support the people affected by the crisis.


World Water Day 2022: FDFA launches new water guidelines

Switzerland is firmly committed to ensuring access to safe drinking water and sanitation for the neediest. To coincide with the 9th World Water Forum from 21 to 26 March 2022 and World Water Day on 22 March 2022, the FDFA is launching its Guidelines on Water 2022–25, which reaffirm Switzerland's efforts in this field. Clear principles and priorities are set forward for reinforcing Switzerland's effectiveness and coherence in its work in the water sector.


President Cassis discusses humanitarian situation with Moldovan President Sandu

On Tuesday, 22 March, President Ignazio Cassis met Moldova’s president, Maia Sandu, and the prime minister, Natalia Gavrilița. This was the first visit to Moldova by a Swiss president. Besides acknowledging the two countries’ bilateral relations, the talks focused on refugee movements from Ukraine and the humanitarian situation.


President Ignazio Cassis to travel to Poland and Moldova

President Ignazio Cassis will travel to Poland and Moldova next week for talks with authorities on the ground about the situation of refugees from Ukraine and also Switzerland's humanitarian aid for Ukraine and neighbouring countries. In Poland, Mr Cassis will meet with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Monday, 21 March. In Moldova, an exchange with President Maia Sandu is scheduled for Tuesday.


Switzerland pledges CHF 14.5 million for humanitarian aid to Yemen

At the High-Level Pledging Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, held in Geneva in a hybrid format, President of the Swiss Confederation Ignazio Cassis announced further CHF 14.5 million in financial support for humanitarian aid activities on the ground. The conference was opened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.


Switzerland steps up humanitarian aid for Ukraine

A fourth consignment of relief supplies to meet people's daily needs is departing from Switzerland today (Monday) by rail for Poland and the Ukrainian border. Swiss Humanitarian Aid has set up a hub for relief supplies in the Polish city of Lublin in order to coordinate its support for the Ukrainian population. The Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit has dispatched an additional rapid response team to Moldova. During this first phase of the relief operation, Swiss Humanitarian Aid's support package is initially set at 8 million Swiss francs.


Youth and Future Prize: SDC and SECO sponsor projects by committed young people

The Youth and Future Prize 'Together we're better', launched for the second time by the SDC and SECO, sparked great interest. A total of 62 entries from young people under 35 were received. Their goal: to contribute to sustainable development and the reduction of poverty in a country where Switzerland is engaged in international cooperation. The projects can now be viewed on the www.togetherwerebetter.ch website (https://togetherwerebetter.ch/projects/en). The prizes will be presented on 31 March 2022 at the International Cooperation Forum in Geneva.


Switzerland sends humanitarian aid to Ukrainian population

Switzerland is delivering around 25 tonnes of relief supplies to the Ukrainian population. Swiss Humanitarian Aid will transport urgently needed materials and medical supplies from the Armed Forces Pharmacy to Poland today and tomorrow. The aid supplies are part of Switzerland's overall support package worth around CHF 8 million.
