The Rights and Resources Group (RRG) is the formal coordination mechanism of the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI). It is a multidonor initiative that supports forest tenure and user rights reforms in developing countries with particular focus on those countries that have committed to mitigate greenhouse gases through REDD+. It addresses the forest carbon issues from a co-benefit perspective including poverty reduction, climate protection and sustainable resources use.

Contexto

Multidonor core fund to improve tenure and user rights.

Objetivos

Improved governance of forest areas in developing countries for poverty reduction, climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.

Efectos a medio plazo

  • By 2017 RRI will help bring an additional 100 million hectares of forest lands under formally recognized ownership or control, of indigenous peoples or forest communities. These additional 100 mio hectares will bring the total of such forest areas in developing countries to 35% of the total developing country forest estate, up 8% from the 2008 baseline of 27%.
  • By 2017 RRI will play a key role in increasing the value and benefits of forests accruing to 500 million in indigenous territories and forest communities in developing countries
  • Resultados

    Resultados de las fases anteriores:  

    Through supporting policy and market reforms, generating globally strategic analyses, strengthening networks and mobilizing global awareness RRI is recognized as leading network on forest tenure. From 2008 to 2011, it:

    1. worked intensively in eight priority countries, engaged seventeen additional countries in strategic activities and organized dialogues in seven OECD countries;
    2. catalyzed and promoted over 500 activities at country and regional levels;
    3. supported 20 strategic opportunities to advance reforms in thirteen countries and committed over USD 800’000 via its Strategic Response Mechanism, a rapid source of funding to convert opportunities into reforms
    4. convened eleven public dialogues on forest rights, governance, and climate change on five continents;
    5. produced and distributed 120+ policy briefs, reports and brochures in eight languages. RRI was quoted in 360+ media stories across 30 countries in fifteen languages.
