Switzerland is supporting the water sector in Macedonia (MK) since 1994. As follow-up of the discussion with Greece on the Enlargement Contribution, Switzerland identified projects in the neighbourhood of Greece (GR) that could be beneficiary for Greece too. One of the proposed projects was the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Gevgelija. With this project Switzerland confirms its status as the major donor in Macedonia in the area of (waste)water treatment and management.

Objetivos

The Gevgelija Wastewater Treatment Project aims at supporting a sustainable development of the Municipality of Gevgelija and at the improvement of the water quality in the river Vardar, which will enable safe irrigation downstream of the border with Greece, through the con-struction of a wastewater collector and a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Up to today, no wastewater treatment whatsoever was done in Gevgeljia. The project will also foster trans-boundary cooperation between Macedonia and Greece and will assist Macedonia in fulfilling the requirements of the EU water related directives and international treaties.
