Support to Village Councils in the West Bank with a focus on Area C

SDC will support local government units to improve the delivery of basic services in marginalized rural areas of the West Bank with a focus on Area C. This intervention is consistent with the State-building agenda which forms the basis for SDC development programme in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), the promotion of human rights/international humanitarian law and the alleviation of poverty. It is aligned to the Palestinian Authority’s policy framework for Area C. Its operating modalities are harmonized with like-minded donors in the local governance sector.

The rural poor in Afghanistan suffer from a lack of access to basic services and markets. The labour based road construction project addresses these pressing needs of the people and complements an ongoing Swiss livelihood intervention. Through predictable income, the rehabilitation of vital rural infrastructure and by ensuring access to services and markets, the project contributes to improve the lives of men, women and children in a remote rural area.

BASAL contributes to the reduction of the vulnerabilities of the agricultural sector to climate change in Cuba. Its contributions concentrate on the identification, development and application, of measures and tools to promote the adaptation of the Cuban agriculture to the effects of climate change. The project also increases institutional and individual capacities to use the tools and methodologies, put at the disposal of the authorities and the Cuban institutions for the implementation of effective politics that contribute to a sustainable food production in a context of changing climate.

Clearing for Result (CfR III): Mine Action for Human Development (2016-2019)

Although over the past 20 years Cambodia has cleared nationwide 1,412km2 of land from mines, an area of 1,640km2 still remains contaminated. Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) will clear over 27km² of heavily contaminated land ensuring safe access to productive land and improving poor rural communities’ livelihoods. SDC’s support to Cambodia’s mine action aligns with the Maputo Declaration 15+ commitment to declare Cambodia mine-free by 2025 and with the Swiss Humanitarian Mine Action Strategy (2016 – 2019).

Federal Government of Somalia and UN Joint Programme on Youth Employment

The youth employment programme for Somalia aims to create employment opportunities for youth between 15 and 24 years through vocational education, enterprise training, and the rehabilitation of infrastructure in high potential sectors of the economy. The programme is embedded in a state building and stabilization perspective and recognizes that Somali youth are essential for the recovery and growth of Somalia, but could also be a destabilizing force if ignored.

Ecuador, Technical Support in Earthquake Resistant Reconstruction

An earthquake of the magnitude of 7.8 (Richter scale) hit Northern Ecuador, on 16 April 2016. Damages were widespread, collapsing structures within hundreds of km’s from the epicenter. Following SDC/HA’s emergency and early recovery interventions, SHA will provide the Ecuadorian government with technical support in capacity building on earthquake resistant construction, capitalizing SDC’s experiences from Pakistan and Haiti.

Policy Reform on Local Governance (PROLOG II)

Decentralisation as a strategy for pro-poor political transformation places Local Governments on the driving seat for improved local public services. PROLOG II provides technical assistance to the Government of Bangladesh in the decentralization reform. It also involves citizens -including women and disadvantaged groups- in overseeing their municipalities for increased accountability. Ultimately citizens will gain from local public services responding to their needs.

WFP Special Operation: Logistics and Telecommunications Augmentation and Coordination in Response to the Hurricane Matthew in Haiti: Additional Allocation

On 4 October, Haiti was hit by a category 4 Hurricane, which severely affected 2.1 million people – among which 1.4 million are in need of emergency assistance. Reports revealed major material damages and important livestock and crop losses up to 80%-100% in certain regions. WFP has planned to assist 806’000 people during 3 months, but the emergency response suffers which a 57% shortfall in funding (over USD 48 million) and its Special Operation designed to provide logistic support to the delivery of the response particularly for hard to reach communities in the mountainous parts where assistance has to be airlifted and is only 50% funded.

Since 2002, the Poverty Reduction Fund is a main programme in Lao PDR that effectively and efficiently delivers resources and public services, such as water supply, dispensaries, schools and village roads to the poorest villages in remote areas. PRF contributes to reduce rural poverty through enabling poor communities to assess their own needs and priorities through participatory mechanism and to determine how best to use resources to maximize their social and economic development.
