The Swiss contribution to Romania amounts to CHF 181 million. Between now and 2019, 17 projects and 7 thematic funds designed to reduce economic and social disparities in Romania are implemented. A Swiss Contribution Office (SCO) has been established in Bucharest for the purpose of working closely on project implementation with the National Coordination Unit within the Romanian Ministry of Public Finance.

In support of the programme, Switzerland has funded the energy-efficient renovation of school buildings, the installation of several thousand LED lights on the city's streets and the purchase of electric buses – making a significant contribution to climate change mitigation and improving the quality of life of the city's population.

Energy transition in Romania, pilot city launches electric bus fleet

Eleven zero-emission electric buses have been in circulation in the city of Cluj-Napoca since June 2018. They are Romania's first electric buses. Switzerland is supporting the pilot project as part of its Energy City programme in Romania. It is assisting four Romanian cities in their efforts to transition to greener energy.

At its meeting on 28 March 2018, the Federal Council decided to initiate the consultation procedure on a second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states. With this contribution, Switzerland aims to continue to contribute to the reduction of economic and social disparities in the EU member states. Last year, the Federal Council set two priorities for this contribution: vocational education and training and migration.
