Asbestos disposal in the Voivodship Lublin

Renewal of roofs containing asbestos

In the past, asbestos was greatly appreciated as a building material until it was realised that asbestos dust posed a serious health risk. Switzerland is helping Poland to introduce a system for the monitoring and disposal of asbestos in the Voivodship Lublin. It will also remove rubbish containing asbestos from illegal dumps and will renew the roofs of 16'000 houses.

Wastewater treatment in Dlhé nad Cirochou

Only around 60% of households in Slovakia are connected to the sewer network. Switzerland is supporting the municipality of Dlhé nad Cirochou with the construction of a 4.8 kilometre sewer network. This will give more than 1,800 inhabitants access to the wastewater system. In addition, the capacity of the existing wastewater treatment system will be almost doubled.

Promotion of renewable energy in Primorska

Up to now, "green energy" in Slovenia has been almost exclusively derived from hydroelectric power plants, but that is set to change. Switzerland has been supporting a project in Slovenia that promotes other sources of renewable energy: a noise barrier along a motorway has been equipped with solar panels and 29 public buildings that were previously heated with oil have been converted to biomass heating, 12 of which have also been made energy efficient.

Integrated Export Services for Sustainable Support of SMEs

The project aims to strengthen the competitiveness and export capacities of small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs), specifically in the wood and furniture industry as well as in the organic agriculture sector, by improving their export potential and their market diversification, thereby reducing economic disparities and contributing to the development of two of Romania's poorest regions. Currently, Romania has a low number of exporting SMEs and a limited number of innovative companies being involved in export. The project is full in line with Romania’s National Export Strategy (2014-2020) owing to Romania’s competitive advantages such as technical skills, good farmland, availability of raw materials and external demand. 


Sustainable Energy Action Fund

The objectives of this Fund are to enhance the sustainable energy management at the municipal level in Romania by improving municipal infrastructure, building capacity and raising awareness about energy efficiency and renewable energy in order to increase living standards, promote economic development and provide a response to climate change.


Institutionalization of European Energy Award

The “Energy City / European Energy Award” is a certification system for sustainable energy management in municipalities. The implementation of the related controlling process favors the optimal allocation of resources to energy relevant projects. The "European Energy Award" is a good instrument to pursue the objectives of the EU program "Covenant of Mayors" which promotes the 20/20/20 objectives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, improve energy efficiency by 20% and increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix by 20%, at the level of municipalities.


Extension of Metro Line no 4 pre-feasibility and feasibility studies

Heavy traffic, pollution and an under-dimensioned street network became the order of the day in Bucharest. Substantial investments in the existing metro network, operated by Metrorex, are urgent. Since it is planned to extend the M4 metro line, this projects supports the preparation of a pre-feasibility study and a feasibility study, based on whose Metrorex will be able to reach out to potential donors to secure financing for the actual implementation of this large infrastructure project.


Romanian-Swiss Program for SMEs

SME finance and thus the development of the Romanian private sector have been identified as a priority under the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme. The Romanian-Swiss Program for SMEs will respond to the existing gap on the Romanian financial market by providing investment loans, which are backed by preferential guarantees, to SMEs in six priority sectors of the Romanian economy, namely manu­facturing, health care and medical services, tourism, clean-tech, information and communication, as well as transportation. If an SME of one of these sectors fulfills certain quality criteria (i.a. operating license since at least one year, no arrears owed to Romanian authorities) as well as the lending rules and procedures of the participating commercial bank CEC Bank S.A., it is eligible for an investment credit in order to implement its business plan.


Suceava electromobility

This project aims at promoting electromobility in the city of Suceava and throughout Romania. The supply of different types of e-vehicles and the construction of a dense and future-oriented network of charging stations shall promote this technology. The effects of the projects are a reduced consumption of energy resulting in a decreased emission of climate-effecting gases. Furthermore, an example for the use of electric vehicles as a way towards a more sustainable and green mobility is to be made.


Arad rehabilitation of district heating

The activities of this project are twofold. Parts of the thermal transport network in Arad are rehabilitated. Moreover, an existing thermal substation in Aradul Nou, a residential area in Arad, is converted into a new heat boiler station. Besides the improvement of comfort to its citizens, as well as the reduction of CO2 emissions and consequent improvement of the environment, the municipal district heating rehabilitation programme is also intended to improve the finances of the Municipality of Arad.
