Only around 60% of households in Slovakia are connected to the sewer network. Switzerland is supporting the municipality of Dlhé nad Cirochou with the construction of a 4.8 kilometre sewer network. This will give more than 1,800 inhabitants access to the wastewater system. In addition, the capacity of the existing wastewater treatment system will be almost doubled.

In the past, asbestos was greatly appreciated as a building material until it was realised that asbestos dust posed a serious health risk. Switzerland is helping Poland to introduce a system for the monitoring and disposal of asbestos in the Voivodship Lublin. It will also remove rubbish containing asbestos from illegal dumps and will renew the roofs of 16'000 houses.

Promotion of renewable energy in Primorska

Up to now, "green energy" in Slovenia has been almost exclusively derived from hydroelectric power plants, but that is set to change. Switzerland has been supporting a project in Slovenia that promotes other sources of renewable energy: a noise barrier along a motorway has been equipped with solar panels and 29 public buildings that were previously heated with oil have been converted to biomass heating, 12 of which have also been made energy efficient.

Water Supply and Wastewater of the municipality of Brod Moravice

Brod Moravice is located in the region of Gorski Kotar, where Switzerland and Croatia intend to implement three water supply and wastewater projects. The uncontrolled discharge of untreated sanitary wastewater risks to pollute drinking water sources and catchment areas of the Danube and the Adriatic Sea. Moreover, the existing drinking water systems are in need of maintenance. A feasibility study, also financed through the Swiss contribution to Croatia, detects deficiencies and defines needs for action.

NAFA – Tax Project (EDMS)

The Romanian Ministry of Public Finance aims to strengthen its administrative capacity in order to ensure a better revenue collection, to raise the level of compliance and to offer better services to taxpayers. The objective of this project is to create the procedural and functional framework for the introduction of an efficient electronic document management system (EDMS) within the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (NAFA).


Project Preparation Facility (PPF)

The Swiss Contribution to enlargement aims to finance a broad variety of projects. The PPF to Croatia provides the necessary financial assistance to the Executing Agency Croatian Waters – Hrvatske vode – to elaborate high quality project documents for seven water supply and wastewater systems in municipalities of the region Gorski Kotar. Such preparatory works contain complex studies, the drawing of preliminary plans, the receipt of location permits, etc. Based on this information, Switzerland will be able to commit funds to well-elaborated projects.


Basel Trams for Sofia

To improve the public transport system of Sofia, Switzerland will finance the donation of up to 28 used but modernized trams, the training of the personnel responsible for operation and maintenance of the trams as well as a multi-modal mobility study.


Cluj-Napoca rehabilitation of public buildings

The objectives of the project are the thermal and electric rehabilitation of four buildings in the two public schools in the city of Cluj-Napoca (George Cosbuc National College and Sigismund Toduta music high school). Besides the improvement of energy efficiency and cost savings, the project will also contribute to improved working conditions of students and put the buildings in line with sanitary requirements for public schools.
