The programme will strengthen inclusive local governance, gender-based violence prevention and the civic space in Uzbekistan. It promotes an active civil society and civic engagement of youth and vulnerable groups at local level (locally-led development). Switzerland brings high credibility in local governance and human rights and acts as convenor and bridge builder. The multi-stakeholder set up with UN, non-governmental organizations and local authorities offers a variety of entry points, allowing agile steering in the complex political environment.
National Water Resources Management Project in Uzbekistan (NWRM)

The project supports the water sector reform through the development and operationalization of strategic and regulatory framework based on a full-fledged integrated water resources management approach, embracing all water users and multi-actors’ space aligned with administrative changes. This will allow to achieve climate change resilience, food and water security, increased water productivity and improved livelihoods of the rural population in Uzbekistan.
Strengthening Water and Sanitation and Protection of Water Resources in Uzbekistan

The project will strengthen Uzbekistan in water and sanitation with a focus on protection of water resources. This contribution is designed in the frame of the UNECE led and implemented Assistance and Cooperation Program and shall support Uzbekistan’s accession to and implementation of the Protocol on Water and Health and the Industrial Accidents Convention as part of protecting human health, well-being and the environment through improving water management, the protection of water eco-systems, and reducing water-related diseases.
Contribution to UNESCO project: Empowering the government and citizens of Uzbekistan by strengthening access to information, accountability of institutions and media competence

The project will strengthen citizen’s access to information, accountability and transparency of governmental institutions and enhance the quality of the media and information landscape in Uzbekistan. UNESCO as implementing partner has a solid partnership with the government and supports ongoing legislative reforms with expertise, ensuring alignment with international standards, capacity building for key government stakeholders (incl. judiciary, law enforcement bodies) and media competence of professionals.

The project aims to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in Uzbekistan ensuring justice for victims of human rights abuses, enhancing civic space, integrating human rights principles into development and implementing UN Human Rights Mechanisms recommendation. Upon invitation by the President of Uzbekistan OHCHR has expanded its presence in the country.

Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia

The Climate Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia project strengthens national and regional organisations responsible for water resource management in Central Asia to implement climate-sensitive integrated water resources management in a regionally coordinated manner. Switzerland will contribute to this initiative which is designed in the frame of the German led, GIZ implemented Green Central Asia High-Level Platform.
Smart & Precise Prognostic Hydrology for Innovative Risk Management and Resource Use Efficiency in Central Asia (SAPPHIRE Central Asia)

The main goal of the project is to improve hydro-meteorological services provision to key stakeholders in Central Asia. This will be achieved through targeted capacity building of National Hydro-Meteorological Services agencies to valorize gauging station data by integrating a digital assistant solution to improve forecast accuracy. This is instrumental for disaster warning and decision-making across water-dependent sectors of the Central Asian economies.
Empowering the Youth to Embrace the Digital Economy and Digital Entrepreneurship

The project aims at empowering young people, especially women, with digital entrepreneurship skills, tools and an enabling environment to increase their employment opportunities and to improve the competitiveness and resilience of youth-led business. It comprises a large-scale digital skills and entrepreneurship training program, business advisory support for youth-led enterprises and the development of innovative solutions for start-ups.

The goal of the contribution to the World Bank’s Multi-Donor Trust Fund is to strengthen Uzbekistan’s cotton value chain, by making it environmentally more sustainable, promoting value addition to raw cotton and accessing international markets, generating income opportunities, ensuring decent work and inclusion of woman and vulnerable groups. The Projects will help to sustain progress achieved regarding labor rights and eliminating forced labor. It supports the Uzbek green growth strategy.

The project aims at improving the protection of women and victims of Gender Based Violence in Uzbekistan by strengthening the role of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) to influence national policy and legislation, to raise awareness about domestic gender-based violence, and to provide more effective support services to women victims of violence. The Project is part of a Central Asia project implemented by the International NGO ACTED.
Central Asia: Gender and DRR Study 2022

This study will focus on understanding the relevance and influence of gender dynamics on Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) measures in Central Asia. It aims to garner practical insights that are useful to rendering Switzerland's and partners' work in the areas of DRM more gender-sensitive, and to explore the potential for DRM activities to have a gender-transformative impact in order to inform sustainable humanitarian and development interventions.
