Bangladesh and Switzerland celebrate 45 years of friendship

The year 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Bangladesh. To celebrate this joyful occasion in a festive mood, the Embassy of Switzerland, in collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, organized a special celebratory event at Pan Pacific Sonargaon on 02 November 2017. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh Mr. René Holenstein welcomed the guests and dignitaries. The Hon’ble Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali MP graced the event as the Chief Guest, while the Hon’ble Minister for Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Asaduzzaman Noor MP attended the event as the Special Guest.

Switzerland increases aid for Rohingya refugees to CHF 8 million

The international community came together in Geneva today to mobilise funds for the Rohingya. Since August this year, more than half a million people have been forced to flee violence in Myanmar and seek refuge in Bangladesh. Given the extent of this humanitarian crisis, Switzerland has decided to increase its financial contribution to CHF 8 million. Switzerland reiterates its call upon the government of Myanmar to respect international law and, in particular, to protect human rights and also calls for the perpetrators of violations to be brought to justice.

High level Swiss official now in Bangladesh; visits Rohingya settlements in Cox’s Bazar

The Delegate of the Swiss Government for Humanitarian Aid and Deputy Director General of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Ambassador Manuel Bessler reiterated Switzerland’s commitments to support Bangladesh and provide humanitarian assistance in view of the Rohingya crisis. Mr. Bessler is currently in Bangladesh on a five-day visit to obtain a first-hand impression of the latest influx of the displaced Rohingya population into Cox’s Bazar and the related humanitarian crisis. On 01-03 October he visited a number of Rohingya settlements in Cox’s Bazar and met with relevant stakeholders during the trip. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh René Holenstein accompanied Mr. Bessler during the visit to the settlements.

Switzerland commits 1.2 million Swiss Francs in emergency assistance

An eight member Swiss parliamentary delegation, including five Swiss Parliamentarians, visited Bangladesh to attend the 136th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held on 01-05 April 2017. During their stay in Bangladesh, the Swiss delegation visited Hop Yick (Bangladesh), an apparel factory in Dhaka Export Processing Zone, on 03 April to observe the training activities under “Skills and Employment Programme in Bangladesh” (Sudokkho project). They also interacted with the business community, development practitioners, civil society members and cultural personalities.

A photography workshop for young and aspiring photographers held in Dhaka

A three-day photography workshop was held in Dhaka on 23- 25 September 2016. 12 winners of the “Focus on Culture” photo competition participated in this workshop conducted by Bangladeshi photographer GMB Akash. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC and the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh organized the workshop and the photo competition to promote young and aspiring Bangladeshi photographers.

Joint statement from the Embassy of Switzerland and the Embassy of Spain in Bangladesh on the supplying of 70 locomotives by a Spanish/Swiss company to Bangladesh

The Spain based Swiss company Stadler Rail Valencia S.A.U. has been selected as preferred bidder by the Ministry of Railways of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in a tender process for supplying 70 locomotives to Bangladesh Railway. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh, H.E. Christian Fotsch and the Ambassador of Spain to Bangladesh, H.E. Eduardo de Laiglesia y del Rosal, jointly paid a call on the Honourable Finance Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, H.E. Abul Maal A. Muhith, on 02 August, 2016 to apprise the Honourable Minister about this important project.
