Celebrate and stand up for Human Rights

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to underline the importance of Human Rights particularly ahead of the 3rd Universal Periodic Review of Bangladesh a panel discussion and film screening event took place on 10 May 2018 at the Goethe Institut in Dhaka. The Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva (FIFDH) jointly organized the event.

President of the Swiss Confederation visits Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar

The President of the Swiss Confederation H.E. Mr. Alain Berset, who is currently in Bangladesh on an official visit, travelled to Cox’s Bazar on 06 February 2018 to gain a first-hand insight into the ongoing humanitarian refugee crisis. He visited the Kutupalong Rohingya camp where he met with Rohingya refugees who have fled Myanmar in recent months. He also visited the Cox’s Bazar Sadar hospital which received Swiss contributions.

President of the Swiss Confederation to visit Bangladesh

The President of the Swiss Confederation H.E. Mr. Alain Berset will pay an official visit to Bangladesh on 04-07 February 2018. In the first official visit by a Swiss president to Bangladesh, there will be two main focuses: solidarity with a country that is severely affected by the crisis in neighbouring Myanmar, and the establishment of closer bilateral relations.

Human rights are at the heart of the values represented by Switzerland and its political model, which is founded on the principles of democracy, non-discrimination, gender equality, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among people having different religious, linguistic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Switzerland calls upon its partners to join it in making this Human Rights Day 2017 a day of unequivocal relevance for the promotion and the protection of human rights.

Bangladesh and Switzerland celebrate 45 years of friendship

The year 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Bangladesh. To celebrate this joyful occasion in a festive mood, the Embassy of Switzerland, in collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, organized a special celebratory event at Pan Pacific Sonargaon on 02 November 2017. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh Mr. René Holenstein welcomed the guests and dignitaries. The Hon’ble Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali MP graced the event as the Chief Guest, while the Hon’ble Minister for Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh, H.E. Mr. Asaduzzaman Noor MP attended the event as the Special Guest.

Switzerland increases aid for Rohingya refugees to CHF 8 million

The international community came together in Geneva today to mobilise funds for the Rohingya. Since August this year, more than half a million people have been forced to flee violence in Myanmar and seek refuge in Bangladesh. Given the extent of this humanitarian crisis, Switzerland has decided to increase its financial contribution to CHF 8 million. Switzerland reiterates its call upon the government of Myanmar to respect international law and, in particular, to protect human rights and also calls for the perpetrators of violations to be brought to justice.

High level Swiss official now in Bangladesh; visits Rohingya settlements in Cox’s Bazar

The Delegate of the Swiss Government for Humanitarian Aid and Deputy Director General of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Ambassador Manuel Bessler reiterated Switzerland’s commitments to support Bangladesh and provide humanitarian assistance in view of the Rohingya crisis. Mr. Bessler is currently in Bangladesh on a five-day visit to obtain a first-hand impression of the latest influx of the displaced Rohingya population into Cox’s Bazar and the related humanitarian crisis. On 01-03 October he visited a number of Rohingya settlements in Cox’s Bazar and met with relevant stakeholders during the trip. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh René Holenstein accompanied Mr. Bessler during the visit to the settlements.

Switzerland commits 1.2 million Swiss Francs in emergency assistance

Switzerland has committed to contribute 1.2 million Swiss Francs (approximately BDT 102’000’000) in emergency humanitarian assistance for the Rohingya people and the flood affected people in Bangladesh through the SDC Humanitarian Aid.
