Which documents should I submit with a national visa application?

The application will be forwarded to the competent cantonal authorities in Switzerland for a decision. The Embassy of Switzerland can only issue the visa after approval by the competent authorities. The total processing time is approximately 8-12 weeks. This time is an approximation only and may vary considerably depending on the canton responsible and the elements of the application.

For family reunion applications, kindly send us:
from the person living in Switzerland
- copy of passport
from the person living in Ethiopia
- copy of a valid passport and/or emergency travel document
- copy of the marriage certificate
- copy of the birth certificate
- phone number and email address
Ethiopian civil status documents have to be issued by the Vital Events Registration Agency VERA and need to be legalized by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
All documents written in Amharic, Oromia or Tigrinya need to be translated into German, French, Italian or English

The appearance in person of the applicant is mandatory.

The processing time for a national visa D is up to several weeks or months. More specific information can be given by the competent cantonal migration office in Switzerland only.
