Agriculture is a major economic sector of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). Ensuring food security is a key concern and is considered a high priority by the government.
One of the greatest loss to the production of maize crop was identified as being caused by one insect pest, the Asian corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis. The larvae of this pest feed inside the maize stem and attack the cobs, resulting in major yield losses.
Supported by the funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the EC DG EuropeAid, the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI) worked with local partners, the Plant Protection Institute of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences (PPI-AAS) and the Central Plant Protection Station of the Ministry of Agriculture (CPPS) to develop and implement an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to this problem.
This video highlights the achievement of the development cooperation agencies through the initial investment, multi-agency support and the subsequent uptake of the proven IPM approach and national dissemination by the national authorities in DPRK.
