Switzerland and Kenya stress interest in closer cooperation

Switzerland and Kenya wish to deepen their relations. President Alain Berset and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta acknowledged the significant potential for closer cooperation during their official talks in Nairobi on Monday, 9 July. They discussed efforts to fight corruption as well as healthcare and international affairs. A declaration of intent on the return of illegally acquired funds was signed in the presence of the two presidents.


Swiss commitment and success at the Human Rights Council

The 38th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva ends today following three weeks of work. Switzerland presented two resolutions, the first concerning human rights in the context of peaceful demonstrations, the second highlighting the contribution of the Human Rights Council to preventing human rights violations. The Council adopted both resolutions.


Switzerland and EU adapt their insurance agreement

Switzerland and the EU have been adapting their Direct Insurance Agreement which has existed since 1989 to the new regulatory requirements. The mixed committee with representatives from both sides adopted the changes on 3 July 2018 and brought them into effect. Thereby the agreement is also in line with the future requirements of the Swiss insurance business.


Strategy and Holocaust education adopted: final report from Swiss chairmanship of the IHRA

Switzerland's chairmanship of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) has made a significant contribution to the organisation's adoption of a strategy and priorities for its activities over the coming years. These results were highlighted in the FDFA's report on the Swiss chairmanship of the IHRA, which the Federal Council was informed of during its meeting on 4 July 2018. The report included specific activities demonstrating how Switzerland had helped promote the goals of the IHRA. The IHRA aims to promote research and education in relation to the Holocaust and to keep the memory of the victims alive through commemoration ceremonies and places of remembrance.


Fresh impetus for bilateral relations: President Berset to visit Kenya

Switzerland and Kenya want to broaden their relations. To strengthen contacts at the highest political level, President Alain Berset will travel to Kenya on an official visit. Official talks with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta are scheduled for Monday, 9 July. On Tuesday, 10 July, Mr Berset will visit the Kakuma refugee camp.


European policy: current state of negotiations on the institutional issues and next steps

At its meeting on 4 July 2018 the Federal Council took note of the technical progress on institutional negotiations with the European Union (EU). On the basis of the existing negotiating mandate, it instructed the negotiating delegation to continue the discussions with the EU with a view to reaching agreement on the institutional issues.


Switzerland and Iran discuss ways of developing relations

On Tuesday, 3 July, during the official visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Bern, Switzerland and Iran reaffirmed their support for the Road Map agreed in 2016; the two countries expressed their wish to deepen relations in spite of the current circumstances and push ahead with implementing the Road Map. The talks between President Rouhani and a Federal Council delegation led by President Alain Berset focused on stabilising the nuclear deal with Iran following the withdrawal of the USA and bilateral cooperation. An agreement and two declarations of intent were signed following the talks.



Annual Swiss Development Cooperation Conference: Federal Councillor Cassis calls for effectiveness

The sustainable development of urban and rural areas in Africa was at the heart of the SDC/SECO Annual Swiss Development Cooperation Conference that took place on 29 June 2018 in Bern. Participating for the first time in his capacity as head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis called for effectiveness in the field of international cooperation.


Paul Seger appointed Swiss ambassador to Germany

In April 2018, the UN Secretary-General appointed Christine Schraner Burgener, until May head of mission in Berlin, as Special Envoy on Myanmar. Paul Seger, head of mission in Yangon (Myanmar) since October 2015, will become the new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany, succeeding Ms Schraner Burgener in August 2018.


Barn owls and art feature on diplomatic corps excursion to the canton of Fribourg

A farm in the Sense district of canton Fribourg and the Espace Jean Tinguely-Niki de Saint Phalle in the town of Fribourg itself were the sites of this year’s excursion for the diplomatic corps. The farm in Bösingen FR was chosen because it is home to barn owls; these much-prized birds of prey are at the heart of a science diplomacy project in the Middle East.


Zimbabwe: Switzerland welcomes political parties' commitment to prevent electoral violence

At an official ceremony in Harare this Tuesday, Zimbabwe’s political parties committed to respect a Code of Conduct for the first elections following the departure of former President Mugabe. Switzerland congratulates all political leaders on this key contribution to the prevention of violence and fraud, and calls on them to fully meet their commitments. At the request of the political parties, the FDFA provided advice during the negotiations on the drafting of the Code of Conduct and will continue its support to help widely communicate the Code, monitor its implementation and resolve disputes peacefully until the elections, which are scheduled to take place on 30 July 2018.
