During his studies in Europe, Rizal had the opportunity to visit Switzerland and learn the story of Wilhelm Tell. Seeing parallels between the struggles of the Swiss and Filipinos, he translated this play by Friedrich Schiller into Filipino. Annette Hug and Ramon Guillermo discuss the the translation and the importance of literature in history.
