Switzerland recognises and permits same-sex marriage since 1 July 2022. As of the same date, registered partnerships are no longer concluded in Switzerland.
If your marriage or partnership was registered abroad, it must be entered into the Swiss civil register by the proper authority in Switzerland. In order to do so, you need to submit certain documents to your Swiss representation.
Same-sex couples whose marriage has already been recognised and entered as a registered partnership in the Swiss civil status register may apply to update this entry.
Partners may at any time make a joint declaration that they wish to convert their registered partnership into a marriage. The declaration of conversion may be made at any civil registry office in Switzerland or at the competent Swiss representation abroad. This declaration of conversion is subject to fees.
Registered partnerships concluded abroad by couples of different sex are now recognised in Switzerland as registered partnerships, provided that they form a civil status relationship. Since 1 July 2022, the persons concerned may apply for the entry of the partnership in the Swiss civil status register. For further information, please contact the relevant cantonal civil status supervisory authority.
