Industrial Energy Efficiency
The project is a collaboration between the UNIDO, the Departments of Trade and Industry (DTI) and of Energy (DoE) financed by SECO and DFID (UK). The project aims at a shift in industrial energy use practices in South Africa and possibly in the Southern African Region, with a view for industry to achieve a greater energy efficiency, in order to improve energy security and ensure continuity in power supply.

Contexte |
South Africa's industry and production is highly energy intensive. South Africa uses almost four times more energy than OECD countries to produce products of equivalent financial value. Electrical consumption per capita shows how South Africa uses ten times more electricity per capita than the African average, uses double the world average and uses about 60% of the OECD average. |
Objectifs |
The project overall goal is to increase energy efficiency in South Africa in order to contribute to national efforts to improve energy security and electricity supply continuity while seeking that GDP growth is not constrained by energy shortages and rising prices. |
Effets à moyen terme |
Strengthening of capacities of the government to foster improvements in industrial energy efficiency- Capacitation of the relevant national standardization bodies to adopt, promote and implement the ISO 50001 standard- Development of a core group of South African energy practioners in the field of energy management systems/standards- Demonstration of the potential energy and financial savings with adopting energy management systems/standards. |
Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: Industrial energy efficiency policy and regulatory framework development- Development, introduction and promotion of energy management standards, based on the Internation Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 50001- Energy management and energy system optimization capacity building and expert development, through provincial training and resource centers in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban- Demonstration, awareness creation and project communication. |
