Switzerland welcomes Staffan de Mistura's appointment as the new Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria. De Mistura will succeed Lakhdar Brahimi, who announced his resignation in May 2014.

Switzerland reiterates its support for a political resolution of the conflict in Syria. It calls on all parties to the conflict to immediately put an end to all acts of violence against civilians and to give humanitarian organisations fast and unhindered access to the civilian victims of the conflict.

It also calls on the international community to support UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's six-point plan of June 2014 to settle the conflict in Syria.
