Marriage and registered partnership

To register either a marriage or a partnership in Switzerland or abroad, your main point of reference is the registry office in which you have decided to celebrate the marriage or conclude your partnership. It is normally this office that decides what documents are required to mark this civil status event.

You are advised nonetheless to learn in advance about the formalities involved and the civil status documents that may have to be prepared prior to the celebration of a civil status event. These advance steps will facilitate matters when it comes to entering your marriage or registered partnership in the Swiss civil status register (Infostar). To register in the register Infostar, the documents listed on this webpage are to be submitted to the Swiss representation competent for the country where the celebration has taken place.

Marriages in Tanzania

Marriages concluded in Tanzania are recognised in Switzerland on condition that there is no impediment to the marriage under Swiss law. 

In order for your marriage to be registered with the relevant civil status authorities in Switzerland, the documents listed below, along with a copy of each document, are required:

  • Application for marriage registration (see link below), signed by the persons who are currently present in Tanzania 
  • Original document "Copy of an entry of a marriage register" issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam. This document is issued when a marriage needs to be registered abroad. To obtain this document, the original marriage certificate from the district registrar where the marriage took place needs to be submitted 
  • Original marriage Certificate from the district registrar (will be returned) 
  • Original birth certificate of the foreign spouse issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam. If the birth occurred in Zanzibar, the Certificate needs to be issued by RITA Zanzibar. 
  • Original Certificate of civil status of the foreign spouse (Certificate of no impediment) issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam. This certificate must be obtained before marriage and needs to indicate the civil status of the foreign spouse before the marriage. 
  • An Affidavit of the foreign spouse, confirming the civil status before the marriage, issued less than 6 months before and legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam  
  • If the foreign spouse has been married before, the documents concerning the dissolution of the former marriage (Copy of Divorce certificate issued by RITA Dar es Salaam and stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Copy of the Judgement and Copy of the Decree)
  • If the foreign spouse is widowed, copy of the marriage certificate and the original death certificate of the former spouse issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before and stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If the death occurred in Zanzibar, the Certificate of death needs to be issued by RITA Zanzibar.
  • Original Affidavit of residence confirmation of the foreign spouse issued by the competent District Resident Magistrate, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam
  • Passport copy of the spouses

Marriage in Tanzania between two non-residents Swiss Citizens

A certificate of capacity to marry is not required to get married in Tanzania, including in Zanzibar. 

As the requirements are not established for the entire country, the districts are competent for regulating the marriages in their circumscription. 

Before your trip to Tanzania, please check with the district registrar of the municipality in Tanzania where you wish to get married in order to obtain information on the documents required to celebrate a marriage in Tanzania. 

After the marriage, the documents mentioned above are to be submitted.

Marriage and registered Partnership in Switzerland

To celebrate a marriage in Switzerland, a procedure of preparation or marriage needs to be followed. This procedure normally lasts between 2 and 4 months. 

The following documents need to be submitted to the Embassy of Switzerland, along with a copy of each document, by the party residing in Tanzania: 

  • Original birth certificate of the foreign spouse issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam. If the birth occurred in Zanzibar, the Certificate of birth needs to be issued by RITA Zanzibar.
  • Original Certificate of civil status of the foreign spouse (Certificate of no impediment) issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam . This certificate must indicate the civil status of the foreign spouse.
  • If the foreign spouse has been married before, the documents concerning the dissolution of the former marriage (Copy of Divorce certificate issued by RITA Dar es Salaam and stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Copy of the Judgement, Copy of the Decree)
  • If the foreign spouse is widowed, copy of marriage certificate and original death certificate of the former spouse issued by RITA Dar es Salaam less than 6 months before and stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If the death occurred in Zanzibar, the Certificate of death needs to be issued by RITA Zanzibar.
  • Original Affidavit of residence confirmation of the foreign spouse issued by the competent District Resident Magistrate, stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dar es Salaam
  • Passport copy of the spouses
  • From the person living in Switzerland: Copy of a recently issued Certificate of Residence (Wohnsitzbestätigung / Certificat de domicile)
  • From the person living in Switzerland: Copy of a recently issued Certificate of civil status (Personenstandsausweis / Certificat individuel d’état civil)
  • Preparation of marriage forms and declarations, will be filled out at the Embassy on the day of the appointment to submit all the documents for the preparation of marriage

Please contact the Embassy of Switzerland via e-mail to obtain an appointment for procedure of preparation or marriage. 

If you plan to take up residence in Switzerland after marrying or registering a partnership, bear in mind that your foreign spouse or partner will need a residence permit and may require an entry visa. Please consult the Visa – Entry to and Residence in Switzerland section regarding an application to enter Switzerland for the purpose of family reunification.

If you are registered with a Swiss representation and have married or entered into a registered partnership in Switzerland you will need to report your change in civil status to the representation concerned so that the register of the Swiss Abroad can be updated. This will require submission of the following documents (as hard copy or in electronic form):

  • photocopy of the Swiss marriage certificate, Swiss family record or Swiss registered partnership document;
  • photocopy of the identity document of the foreign spouse or partner.

There is no fee for the registration in question.

If prior to the marriage or registered partnership your Swiss spouse or partner was not resident in the consular district of the Swiss representation, and plans to take up residence with you following the said civil status event, he or she will have to register in accordance with the application procedure described under the heading “Registration and change of address”.
