Mountains have impact on Switzerland's image in 2017

Switzerland’s iconic mountains drew particular international attention this year because of a number of natural events linked to climate change. At the same time, the victories of Federer, the Swiss financial centre and a number of popular votes also attracted the attention of foreign media. And according to the Nation Brands Index 2017, Switzerland enjoys a good image abroad overall, retaining its 8th place out of a total of 50 countries.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis to pay official visit to Paris

On 19 December, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the head of the FDFA, will make an official working visit to Paris. During his visit he will meet with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian. On the agenda are various bilateral issues, relations between Switzerland and the EU and topical international issues.



Switzerland and Bolivia seek closer cooperation on Bioceánico project

On Thursday, 14 December, President Doris Leuthard received Bolivian President Evo Morales Ayma, who was paying a working visit to Bern. Discussions focused in particular on infrastructure, economic and trade relations, the rule of law and the SDC’s country programme on Bolivia. The two presidents were present at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two parties on cooperation on the Corredor Tren bioceánico project.


New Swiss ambassadors

A number of staff changes have been announced for 2018 for several Swiss representations abroad, the Swiss mission in Geneva, the head office of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) in Bern, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER), and the Federal Chancellery. The changes will take place as part of the usual transfer rotation and on the basis of appointments made by the Federal Council. The appointment of heads of mission abroad becomes effective following approval by the respective host state.



Confidence building to enhance stability: Federal Councillor Cassis reaffirms Switzerland’s commitment to European security

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is the most important forum for debate on European security. At the OSCE Ministerial Council in Vienna, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment, saying Switzerland would support the OSCE in the search for solutions to current conflicts – such as that in Ukraine – and actively work on measures to build trust. In the margins of the conference, the head of the FDFA held a number of bilateral talks, including with the foreign ministers of Austria, Russia and Ukraine. He also met his counterparts from other OSCE participating states.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis attends OSCE Ministerial Council in Vienna

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will represent Switzerland at the Ministerial Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on 7 December 2017. The Ministerial Council is the most important decision-making and management body of the OSCE at foreign-minister level. In the margins of the meeting, Mr Cassis will also hold bilateral talks.


Green light for the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai

Preparation work for the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai can now begin following today’s approval of Switzerland’s participation in the event by the Council of States as second chamber. The budget has been set at CHF 14.84 million, about half of which will come from third-party funding. Given the economic and geopolitical significance of the host country and region, by participating Switzerland will create a valuable opportunity to showcase the country and its strengths in the areas of education, research, innovation, business and foreign policy.


Restitution of USD 321 million by Switzerland to Nigeria under World Bank oversight: signing of a tripartite agreement

In keeping with its policy of returning illegally acquired assets, Switzerland has reached an agreement with Nigeria and the World Bank on the restitution of approximately USD 321 million to Nigeria's population. The modalities of restitution are set out in an agreement which was signed by the three parties on 4 December in Washington D.C. at the Global Forum on Asset Recovery (GFAR).


Switzerland and Georgia anticipate closer economic relations

During President Doris Leuthard’s visit to Georgia on Monday, 4 December, both sides praised the close and friendly ties between the two states. The presidential visit marks the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Georgia. The discussions with President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili focused on strengthening exchanges between the two states.


Swiss initiative to promote human rights compliance at mega sporting events

As host to some of the most important international sports federations, Switzerland has launched a landmark initiative on mega sporting events and human rights: at the opening of the two-day 2017 Sporting Chance Forum in Geneva on 30 November, Switzerland laid the foundations for new international standards in this area together with sports associations, athletes, states, sponsors, NGOs and international organisations.
