Short Term Food Security Support in Zimbabwe

Projekt abgeschlossen

Zimbabwe is on a path of transition in which SDC supports the increase of food security, the strengthening of livelihoods and self-reliance of the most vulnerable populations. In the past agricultural season the production fell by 33% and 19% of the rural population will be unable to meet their basic food requirements. In this context, the support to WFP combines emergency oriented short term targeted relief assistance with an approach oriented towards medium term solutions to food insecurity.

Hintergrund

Being on a slow recovery path since 2008, Zimbabwe was strongly hit by drought in 2011/2012 reducing the overall cereal production by 33% and leaving a food deficit of 40-50%. 34 % of children under five are stunted and the same percentage of households faces chronic food insecurity. It is expected that 1.6 million people will be unable to meet their basic food requirements until the next harvest in April 2013 is brought in. Especially affected are children and people infected with HIV/Aids. The WFP is responding to the situation by extending its current Protracted Relief and Recover Operations in order to bridge the gap over the lean season and address the increased need.
