Quality Evidence for Health System Transformation (QuEST) Network

In low and middle-income countries 5 million people die each year from treatable conditions despite seeking health care. This means that providing access to health services is not sufficient, but improving quality across the health system is needed. Together with Harvard University, regional research networks and Swiss academia, SDC supports the establishment of a global movement for innovative research to inform policy and cost-effective investments and to improve quality of health systems.

The Borena Zone (Oromia Region) hosts one third of Oromia's conflict Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) between Oromo and Somali groups. Water is a priority for conflict IDP sites and local populations. UNICEF, as the lead agency for the WASH sector in development and humanitarian settings, proposes targeted interventions to respond to immediate life-saving needs by improving access to clean and safe drinking water, and support the recovery phase for both IDPs and host communities.

Global Alliance on Health and Pollution

Pollution causes more than 9 million premature deaths a year of which 92% occur in low and middleincome countries. Toxic pollution impedes economic and social development, costing countries around 2% of annual Gross Domestic Product. The Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP), assists these countries to address pollution-related issues by generating scientific evidence for raising awareness and tracking progress and by providing concrete technical and financial support.

Towards Elimination of Malaria in Tanzania

Tanzania deploys innovative approaches for malaria control and elimination since 2000. To sustain and expand gains that have been achieved, the project will capacitate Tanzanian institutions to engage in subnational, intersectoral and cross borders elimination strategies, thus making available best practices to normative bodies such as World Health Organization (WHO). Tanzania’s and Switzerland’s recognized strong expertise, network and influence in malaria elimination will be increased through this programme.

Strengthening Democracy, Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Nicaragua

The present proposal reaffirms Switzerland’s commitment to foster democracy, protect human rights and restore the Rule of Law in a fragile environment in Nicaragua. As a pillar of its exit strategy towards 2024, SDC supports and strengthens links between national and international human rights mechanisms in a WOGA approach together with the FDFA’s Political Directorate and the Embassies in the US and Costa Rica. SDC continues the dialogue with the government by offering training and advice on conflict transformation and dealing with the past.

National Water Resources Management Tajikistan

The National Water Resources Management Project-11 in the Tajik part of Syr Darya river basin is about fighting poverty and aims at improving rural livelihoods through an efficient and integrated management of water resources. The latter shall allow farmers to increase lastingly their production, hence their incomes and thanks to efficient and sustainable irrigation and agricultural practices.

WaSH Support for Rohingya Refugees and Vulnerable Local Communities in Cox’s Bazar District

Basic services such as infrastructure, health, water, forest and land resources that were available prior to the Rohingya influx in Cox’s Bazar are under strain due to the massive increase in people in the area. The HYSAWA Fund will address the needs and gaps of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, targeting vulnerable host communities and refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar by enhancing capacity of Local Government Institutions. It will apply tools developed in previous Swiss programmes to improve state-citizen relations and relationships between refugees and the host communities.
CCCM: Acción Integral Contra Minas en Algeciras

Este proyecto busca continuar y completar el desarrollo de actividades de desminado humanitario en Algeciras (Huila), como parte de la implementación del acuerdo de paz con las FARC-EP. Tiene como objetivo proteger a las comunidades altamente afectadas por el conflicto armado y crear condiciones para el desarrollo socioeconómico y territorial en una zona donde las FARC-EP tuvo una presencia histórica. Esta contribución abordará un tema clave para una paz sostenible en Colombia. También fortalecerá la Campaña Colombiana Contra Minas (CCCM), que es la primera asociación colombiana acreditada para el desminado humanitario.

African Forests, People and Climate Change

The African forestry sector holds considerable potential for mitigating and facilitating adaptation to adverse impacts of climate change that severely threaten the development of Sub-Saharan Africa. Support to the African Forest Forum ensures that policies and action base on the improved understanding about the relationship between climate change, forests and trees and that these elements will be reflected in their revised nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the climate convention.

Women Deliver Conference and Advocacy

Women Deliver advocates for gender equality as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights, including through the Women Deliver Conference. Investment cases and concrete solutions developed by Women Deliver and partners are used by a diversity of global actors such as the UN, governments including Switzerland, civil society and private sector. Their evidence-based advocacy contributes to the global movement for gender equality.

UNDP – Disaster Risk Management in Cox’s Bazar District

The location, climate and topography of Cox’s Bazar District makes it vulnerable to tropical cyclones and associated storm surges, flash flooding, and landslides. The influx of the Rohingya refugees have raised the population of an already poor, disaster prone-district to 3.5 million people, requiring significant upgrading of disaster risk management capacities. The project supports a comprehensive approach to developing local capacities and enables risk informed-decision making.

Reducing the Prevalence and Impact of Violence in Western Equatoria

Nonviolent Peaceforce’s (NP) intervention in Mundri County, Western Equatoria State is aimed at reducing the prevalence and impact of violence. Key activities will include conducting patrols in risky areas, protective accompaniments, advocacy, conducting trainings workshops, awareness raising activities etc. Through this intervention, Switzerland contributes to creating sustainable grassroots-led peaceful solutions to conflict, promotion of Human Rights, SGBV prevention and response among conflict affected communities.
