Food security in the Great Lakes Region - Nutrition

The program addresses malnutrition by piloting a coordinated multi-stakeholder approach of the four UN agencies UNICEF, WHO, WFP and FAO together with the two Governments of Rwanda and Burundi. The activities will take place in two districts of Rwanda (Nyamagabe and Rutsiro) and one province of Burundi (Ngozi) where food insecurity and poverty are at highest level. The focus is on the reduction of chronic malnutrition of children under five and pregnant and lactating mothers.

Kenya – Skills for Life Training in Kakuma

Refugee protection and integration has been a central objective of the SDC Humanitarian Aid for many years in the region. In the new regional Whole of Government strategy for the Horn of Africa within the pillar migration and protection this objective remains important. The project in Kakuma camp will develop skills that are of utmost benefit within the camp, to the youth of the host communities but also in the refugees’ country of origin, keeping in mind a possible future return.

Acceso a la justicia

En su tercera fase, el proyecto de Fortalecimiento de Capacidades Institucionales (FORDECAPI) se enfoca en el mejoramiento del acceso a la justicia. Sus tres componentes (implementación de centros de arbitraje judiciales, fortalecimiento de la defensa pública y aporte a un diálogo constructivo sobre reformas juridicas) mejoran el acceso judicial de grupos vulnerables de la población y, por consiguiente, la reivindicación e implementación de sus derechos.

NETCELL – Strengthening malaria control

The Government of Tanzania together with Partners has developed a comprehensive malaria control system based on two pillars: 1) vector control (largely based on prevention through Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) distribution campaigns and vouchers) and 2) case management (proper diagnosis and effective treatment). SDC has supported decisively this effort since 2002 through technical and management support. This will be the last phase of support with strong focus on handing over to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Enhancing Primary Health Care Services in Tajikistan

This public health project in Tajikistan aims to improve access to healthcare for rural communities by promoting primary healthcare and family medicine. Specifically, it is building and renovating health centres, training medical and administrative staff, and setting up groups of villagers to promote health in their communities.

Haïti : Programme de préservation et de valorisation de la biodiversité (PVB)

Dans le Massif de la Selle – situé au sud-est d’Haïti – se trouve une des dernières forêts natives du pays. Malgré son statut d’Air protégée, la préservation de la Forêt des pins est menacée par l’instalation autour et dans celle-ci de population à la recherche de revenus. Ainsi, le projet vise à renforcer l’Agence Nationale des Aires protégée du Ministère de l’Environnment dans ses efforts de prise en charge de la gestion participative de l’Aire protégée en incluant les acteurs locaux et en soutenant la population locale dans la création de revenus alternatifs.

Medical Education Reforms in Kyrgyzstan

SDC has been providing support to the Medical Education Reforms in Kyrgyzstan since 2008 with backstopping support from the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève. Despite several political disturbances, the reforms in medical education have made good progress in revising and introducing new standard curriculum at undergraduate level. There is however still need to further design and implement new modules at undergraduate level and to reform postgraduate and continued medical education. This project will thus further support the medical education reforms implemented under the leadership of the Ministry of Health.

Despite many advances in the law and policy environment towards recognition of gender equality and new mechanisms for promotion and protection of women’s human rights, women still experience multiple forms of discrimination in Asia. SDC supports the International Women’s Rights Action Watch (IWRAW) Asia Pacific, which is an international non-governmental organisation working nationally, regionally, and internationally towards the achievement of women's human rights.

More work opportunities for young people in Kosovo

Kosovo suffers under a high rate of youth unemployment. One reason for this is the lack of international competitiveness in the private sector. The 'Promoting Private Sector Employment' (PPSE) project supports companies in the food and tourism industries and helps to create new jobs.

Police Capacity Development on Election Security through the UNDP Election Support Program

On 11th May 2013, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will, for the first time in history, administer a transition from one full term democratic elected government to another. The probability of electoral violence threatens this opportunity. The police are the most important player in smooth conduct of election security. Yet, the majority of the police force has limited knowledge of electoral security protocol. With a contribution to the UNDP Election Support Program the capacity of police in election security will be enhanced.
