Relations between Switzerland and the State of Qatar have been strengthened in recent years, in particular in the areas of trade, services, Swiss high-tech products and expertise, as well as research and education.
Economic cooperation
Qatar makes substantial direct investments in Switzerland. In 1995, Switzerland and Qatar concluded a bilateral agreement on air transport. An investment protection agreement came into force in 2004 and a free trade agreement between the European Free Trade Association and the Gulf Cooperation Council states in 2014.

Researchers and artists from Qatar can apply to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

History of bilateral relations
Shortly after Qatar gained independence in 1973, the Federal Council decided to establish diplomatic relations. In 2013, Switzerland opened an embassy in Doha; that same year, Qatar opened an embassy in Bern.
