Political relations between Switzerland and El Salvador are relatively modest. Switzerland's diplomatic and consular tasks are handled by the Swiss ambassador based in San José (Costa Rica). Switzerland and El Salvador have concluded agreements on the promotion and protection of investments.
Trade with El Salvador is modest. In 2018, Switzerland imported goods worth CHF 2,4 million, mainly textiles and machines. It exported goods to El Salvador worth CHF 14 million. Switzerland's main exports to El Salvador are machinery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

History of bilateral relations
In 1913, Switzerland opened its first consulate in San Salvador, which was upgraded to a consulate general in 1959 and to an embassy in 1968. In 1979, Switzerland closed its embassy following the murder of the chargé d’affaires. A consular agency was opened in 1982. In 1997, the agency was transformed into an honorary consulate general. Since this date bilateral relations have been handled by the Swiss honorary consulate general in San Salvador and by the Swiss embassy in San José.
