Bilateral relations Switzerland–Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are two islands in the eastern Caribbean which, together with an uninhabited islet, form the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, located in the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Diplomatic and economic relations between Switzerland and Antigua and Barbuda are limited in scope.

Key aspects of diplomatic relations

The Swiss embassy in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) represents Switzerland's interests in Antigua and Barbuda. Since May 2011, consular matters have been handled by the regional consular centre in Santo Domingo.

Economic cooperation

The country's economy is based on tourism and the financial services sector. Trade with Switzerland is limited in scope. In 2023 Switzerland imported goods worth CHF 260,000, mainly agricultural products, while Swiss exports to Antigua and Barbuda – primarily watches and metals – amounted to CHF 710,000.

History of bilateral relations

The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are a former British colony where sugar cane was once the predominant crop. Switzerland recognised the independence of Antigua and Barbuda in 1981 and has maintained diplomatic relations with the island nation since then.
