The Swiss ambassador based in San José, Costa Rica, is responsible for representing Switzerland's diplomatic and consular interests in El Salvador. The two countries have concluded bilateral agreements concerning the promotion and protection of investments.

Trade between Switzerland and El Salvador is limited in scope. In 2023, Switzerland imported goods worth CHF 8.2 million from El Salvador, primarily consisting of agricultural products, textiles and machinery. Swiss exports to El Salvador – primarily pharmaceutical products and machinery – amounted to approximately CHF 17.3 million.

History of bilateral relations
Switzerland and El Salvador signed a friendship, business establishment and trade treaty in 1883. In 1913, Switzerland opened its first consulate in San Salvador, which was upgraded to a consulate general in 1959 and to an embassy in 1968. In 1979, Switzerland closed its embassy following the murder of the chargé d'affaires. A consular agency was opened in 1982. In 1997, the agency was transformed into an honorary consulate general. The Swiss embassy in San José is now responsible for diplomatic affairs.
