Bilateral relations Switzerland–Jordan

Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Jordan are based on regular political dialogue and broad cooperation on economic and human development, environment and climate, and science diplomacy. Beyond this, Switzerland is engaged in supporting Jordan in the areas of water, peace and good governance.

Key aspects of diplomatic relations

Switzerland has had an embassy in Jordan since 1970. It has supported the country with development cooperation projects since 2001, and further deepened its commitment in 2011 after the outbreak of the Syria crisis. Taking a whole-of-government approach, Switzerland aids vulnerable population groups, reinforces national-level systems and helps to maintain and improve regional stability.

Swiss companies from the pharmaceutical, tourism and hospitality sectors have a presence in Jordan. Numerous companies with Swiss business ties are members of the Swiss–Jordanian Business Club (SJBC), which was founded in 2006 on the initiative of the Swiss embassy.

In 2024, the volume of trade between the two countries stood at CHF 621 million.

Cooperation on education, research and innovation

Researchers and artists who are citizens of Jordan can apply to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships.

Development cooperation and humanitarian aid

The ‘Syria and Neighbouring Countries 2026–29’ cooperation programme covers five countries: Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. It has four priorities: human development, climate and environment, economic development, and peace and good governance. A budget of around CHF 243 million has been allocated for the implementation period from 2026 to 2029.

According to statistics on the Swiss abroad, there were 298 Swiss citizens living in Jordan in 2026.

History of bilateral relations

Switzerland recognised the Kingdom of Jordan in 1949. The embassy was opened in Amman in 1970, followed by an SDC cooperation office in 2001. Until 2008 Jordan was a focus country for SECO's economic cooperation. The King and the Queen are involved in various World Economic Forum projects, and Queen Rania is a member of its board of trustees.
