Statement: Situation in Iran
The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) monitors the political and social situation abroad and issues specific position statements. The FDFA's positions are guided by the objectives, and priorities of Swiss foreign policy as set out, for example, in the Federal Constitution, the Federal Council's foreign policy strategy, and other thematic and geographical strategies.
Switzerland is following the situation in Iran with great concern and calls on the Iranian authorities to end the violence against demonstrators and to guarantee the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all protesters. During a meeting with the Iranian ambassador to Switzerland on 15 January 2026, Ambassador Monika Schmutz Kirgöz, head of the FDFA's Middle East and North Africa Division, officially protested against the excessive use of force by the Iranian authorities against demonstrators.
Within the scope of its protective power mandate, Switzerland is committed to representing the interests of both the US and Iran. This channel of communication is open and is being used. Switzerland is also available to act as a mediator if requested by the parties involved.
The Swiss Embassy in Iran is open but is currently not providing consular services or processing visa applications due to limited communication capabilities. The embassy is headed by Ambassador Olivier Bangerter, who has been in Tehran since July 2025. In addition to the ambassador, seven Swiss staff members and 20 local employees currently work at the embassy. All Swiss representations abroad have security and crisis measures in place. These are reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis. The measures also include emergency plans.
Around 180 Swiss nationals are registered in Iran, the vast majority of whom also have Iranian citizenship. In addition, around a dozen people are registered as travellers on Travel Admin. The FDFA regularly informs registered Swiss nationals. Since August 2024, the FDFA's travel advice has advised against travel to Iran. According to Article 43 of the Swiss Abroad Act (SAA), persons who stay in Iran contrary to the FDFA's recommendations are acting negligently.
The FDFA does not conduct organised departures for Swiss citizens. Swiss citizens in the country are required to follow the instructions of the local authorities. Swiss citizens wishing to leave the country should contact airlines and tour operators for information on departure options.
