Sustainable Swiss embassies – taking responsibility worldwide

Switzerland is working around the world to achieve a sustainable future in line with the 2030 Agenda. In this regard, our embassies, missions and consulates are more than just official representations: they are showcases for innovation, efficiency and responsible action. Switzerland's ‘sustainable embassies’ initiative demonstrates in a tangible, visible and effective way how our representations abroad protect the environment and resources, fulfil social responsibilities and operate in an economically sustainable manner.

Our representations aim to set an example by saving energy, cutting costs, reducing emissions, promoting local cooperation and reinforcing sustainable procurement. In doing so, they are helping to implement the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Swiss Confederation's Sustainable Development Strategy.

Our presence abroad is designed to be:

• environmentally friendly
• economically efficient
• and socially responsible.

This enhances Switzerland's credibility, promotes trust and builds bridges with partners around the world.

Our approach to sustainability

There are many aspects to sustainability. To ensure its representations around the world develop holistically, Switzerland focuses on three clear dimensions:

• Environment – conserving resources and protecting the climate

  We are reducing the ecological footprint of our locations – from energy-efficient buildings to low water consumption.

  Priority areas:

  • Energy efficiency and renewable energies
  • Sustainable and resilient construction
  • Waste prevention and the circular economy
  • Promotion of biodiversity (e.g. near-natural embassy gardens)
  • Environmentally friendly mobility

• Economy – efficient use of resources

  Acting sustainably also means adopting an economically sound approach. Our measures strengthen efficiency, quality and long-term value retention.

  • Reduction of operating costs
  • Transparent and responsible supply chains
  • Use of innovative technologies

• Society – taking responsibility

  Our representations are part of their local communities. We promote good working conditions, dialogue and cooperation – both within and outside the representations.

  • Fair and safe working conditions
  • Cooperation with local partners
  • Raising awareness among employees
  • Promoting diversity and integration
  • Embassies as meeting places

• Thinking holistically – acting together

  The sustainability of our representations abroad requires all three of these dimensions to work in synergy. This way of thinking informs our projects, our planning and our daily operations around the world.

Our measures – concrete and effective

Our embassies are implementing a range of measures worldwide to help build sustainability into everyday life. Here are a few examples:

• Energy and buildings

  • Use of photovoltaic systems
  • Energy retrofitting
  • LED lighting and smart controls
  • Optimised air conditioning and heating
  • Use of environmentally friendly building materials
