Switzerland offers assistance following the earthquake in South East Asia

31.03.2025 – Switzerland offers assistance following the earthquake in South East Asia

In order to help the affected population, Switzerland has submitted a standard offer of assistance for natural disasters to the Myanmar representation in Geneva. This involves aid measures (experts and basic necessities) in the areas of water supply, basic medical care and emergency shelter. The representation of Myanmar in Geneva has since informed Switzerland that it has accepted the offer.

Switzerland provides the UN with three experts from its Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA). They will assess the situation on the ground and determine needs. They will also support the UN to identify environmental damage, particularly with regard to soil stability, water sources, air quality and infrastructure.

Switzerland is also making additional resources available to its partner organisations on the ground. The corresponding plans are currently being drawn up. The 1,200 hygiene kits financed by Switzerland are being transported to the disaster zone by the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance.

At present, the FDFA has no information about any Swiss nationals who may have been affected. It is currently conducting the necessary enquiries. The Swiss representations in Bangkok and Yangon are in contact with the relevant local authorities.

In order to support the affected population, Switzerland has submitted a standard offer of assistance for natural disasters to the Embassy of Myanmar in Geneva. This offer includes support measures (experts and relief supplies) in the areas of water supply, basic medical care, and emergency shelter.

Currently, 470 people are registered on Travel Admin for Thailand and two for Myanmar. In the Register of the Swiss Abroad, 13,372 people are registered for Thailand and 57 for Myanmar. The regions in Thailand with the largest numbers of Swiss nationals have not been significantly affected by the earthquake. The staff of the Swiss embassies in Bangkok and Yangon are well and the representations are operational. Bangkok airport is open.

Swiss nationals in the area are asked to follow the instructions of the local authorities. The travel advice for Thailand and Myanmar reflects the current assessment of the security situation and is continuously reviewed and updated as necessary.
