Lost and found

You have lost identity documents and/or personal belongings abroad. It is possible that these items have been found by the local police, and if it is clear that they belong to a Swiss citizen, handed over to the Swiss representation.

Loss of official documents

Swiss identity documents (passport/identity card) which have been lost and found must be cancelled and destroyed in accordance with the Ordinance on Identity Documents for Swiss Nationals (SR 143.11). Please contact the relevant Swiss authorities to obtain new Swiss identity documents.

Other official Swiss documents (residence permit, travel document, driving licence) are transferred directly to the relevant administrative issuing authority in Switzerland, which should be contacted directly.

The Swiss representation reserves the right to destroy without warning any bankcard, credit card, insurance card, loyalty card (shop, airline, etc.), and other cards of no apparent value, found without other personal belongings.

Swiss representations abroad work closely with the Lost & Found Office in Bern with regard to lost property found abroad which belongs to Swiss citizens domiciled in Switzerland.

If the items found have been handed over to a Swiss representation and the identity and address in Switzerland of their owner are known the Lost & Found Bern Office will contact the person in question at their Swiss domicile.

  • the items found have been handed over to a Swiss representation,
  • the identity and address of the owner are known.
