The Swiss Embassy is pleased to announce the screening of the movie “Henry Dunant – Red on the Cross” (2006) on 17 October at 18.00 at the Landmark. The movie is in English with Russian subtitles and the screening will be free of charge.

The film shows the tumultuous 18 months preceding the creation of the worldwide renowned, neutral humanitarian organization the “Red Cross”. The protagonist Henry Dunant from Geneva, on his way to talk to French Emporer Napoleon III, encounters the atrocity of the ongoing war between France and Austria in the Italian city Solferino in 1859. Shocked by this terrible situation, he decides to stay there in order to help the victims of the war. This decision changed his life and his aim became to fight for a revolutionary idea: all countries should form associations to help the sick and wounded on the battlefield - whichever side they belonged to which in the end leads to the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1863 and the adoption of the first Geneva Convention the following year.

The movie about Henry Dunant’s passionate commitment and dedication to improve the living conditions of war victims will be introduced by the Head of the Swiss Embassy, Ambassador Philipp Stalder. After the screening of the movie (90 minutes), spectators are warmly invited to discuss the film, the life of Henry Dunant and the importance of ICRC in today’s world with the Head of Delegation of ICRC, Mrs. Elena Ajmone Sessera.
