Swiss photographer Henry Leutwyler's exhibition PORTRAITS EN SILENCE opened on March 13 at Parts Unknown Gallery in Suzhou. On the opening day, the Deputy Consul General of Switzerland in Shanghai Istvan Kocsis gave a warm welcome speech in the presence of the artist.
The exhibition brings together 41 classics taken by Henry Leutwyler during his twenty-five years of photography, including Michael Jackson's gloves and Elvis Presley's family photos. These items are not only witnesses of personal legends, but also carriers of memories of the times. As a portrait photographer, Henry Leutwyler has photographed many world-renowned personalities. He has won many accolades for his unique perspective and keen insight into capturing the emotions and personalities of people. But Henry Leutwyler's understanding of portraits goes beyond ‘people’. He once said, ‘Objects speak, or at least they speak to me.’ Thus, Henry Leutwyler redefined the meaning of ‘portrait’ through still life photography. Not only does it allow us to re-examine the meaning of objects, but it also invites us to understand history and the passage of time in a different way.
