El Agua Nos Une – Water Stewardship
El Agua Nos Une, has established a track record of engaging the private sector and facilitating dialogue with public institutions and community actors to address water-related risks and strengthen water governance, using Swiss expertise. In this new phase, it will progress to building broad partnerships (and alliances) which strengthen water governance, leading to a more responsible and sustainable water use, along supply chains in piloted territories of Latin America.

| Contexte |
Latin America continues to face structural challenges in water management. Despite progress, only 75% of the population has access to drinking water and only 49% to safe sanitation. Severe organic pollution from herbicides, pesticides and industrial compounds pours into rivers, with about one in three rivers being polluted by wastewater and solid waste. Inefficiency reflects low added value per cubic metre of water used (USD 13/m³ compared to a global average of USD 21/m³). These challenges mirror an increase in conflicts, highlighting disputes over access to water and polluting discharges. In no other country are environmental and social leaders in greater danger of intimidation and death than in Colombia. Nevertheless, there are remarkable capacities and willingness among actors to work together, and for countries to share knowledge and know-how. As a governance mechanism, Water Stewardship promotes equitable and sustainable use of water among multiple stakeholders, improves corporate competitiveness and reputation, strengthens capacities in civil society and the public sector, and contributes to climate resilience and adaptation. El Agua Nos Une aligns well with Switzerland’s broader objectives related to climate action, and through SDC’s Water Section draws on Swiss expertise and ability to articulate on joint responsibilities, positioning Switzerland as a pioneering private sector advocate for responsible water use. |
| Objectifs | Water is sustainably managed and responsibly used in selected territories in Colombia, Peru and Mexico through strengthened collective water governance. |
| Groupes cibles |
Direct: companies, business associations, environment and commerce authorities at national and sub-national level, local communities. As well as regional integration and trade platforms. Indirect: water professionals and practitioners, academia, science, technology and innovation institutions, consultancy groups, civil society interested in sustainable lifestyles and ecosystem’s conservation. |
| Effets à moyen terme |
1. Involved actors have jointly established the necessary conditions at the institutional, regulatory and financial level to strengthen collective water governance. 2. Influential private sector actors implement and propagate the practice of Corporate Water Stewardship (CWS) oriented towards responsible water use, along their value chains and through collective action. 3. Authorities, the private sector and civil society work collectively and, through an active community of practice, generate and disseminate fundamental knowledge on water stewardship, at national and international levels. |
| Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: ✓ Accessible information on water availability, uses and water risks to influence policy implementation. ✓ Capacities strengthened of the private and public sector actors to implement policies and financial mechanisms. ✓ Companies apply CWS within business clusters that broaden impacts and influence value chains. ✓ Collective actions that apply Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and territorial priorities for climate resilience. ✓ Business associations promote CWS and encourage innovation, good practices and technologies. ✓ On-demand advice to other countries as well as innovations and good practices shared. ✓ Community of Practice (CoP) linked to regional and global platforms. Principaux résultats antérieurs: During phase1 concrete results were accomplished in Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Brazil. 92 companies applied Corporate Water Stewardship (CWS), in consequence, per year, about 400'000 m³ of water were saved and 30,4 million m³ reused (the amount of water used by about 709’000 people/year). Multi-stakeholder alliances achieved joint actions, applying gender equality and family unity values. Participating partners (“counterparts”) contributed around CHF 2,7 million and 209 factsheets were published. The dynamic Community of Practice reached 700 participants of 20 countries, and provided professional support, on demand, to Ecuador, Panamá and Uruguay. An External Evaluation confirmed these achievements, relevance and consistency with Swiss cooperation priorities, highlighting ownership of local actors, private sector commitment and the strategic support of institutions. It identified challenges such as: concentrating efforts at territorial level, ensuring synergies between outcomes and slow uptake and reach in Brazil. Therefore, phase 2 is envisioned as an evolution of the approach, aiming at concentrating efforts in Colombia, Peru and Mexico, as well as projecting the models of action at regional and global levels. |
