In exactly one year from today, on 10 December 2018, Switzerland together with the international community will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which 70 years after its adoption, remains of unequivocal relevance. Human rights are a necessity for our societies, an invaluable ingredient to boost peace and stability and to foster sustainable development. Human rights are at the heart of the values represented by Switzerland and its political model, which is founded on the principles of democracy, non-discrimination, gender equality, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among people having different religious, linguistic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Switzerland calls upon its partners to join it in making this Human Rights Day 2017 a day of unequivocal relevance for the promotion and the protection of human rights.



International meeting in Bern to ensure better protection for migrants on the Central Mediterranean migration route

Bern, 03.11.2017 - Switzerland will host the third meeting of the Central Mediterranean Contact Group on 13 November 2017 in Bern. Set up at the initiative of Italy, the Contact Group allows European and African countries affected by migration along the Central Mediterranean migration route to exchange information and coordinate their action. Switzerland is hosting this meeting to find better ways to protect migrants. The goal is to improve migrants' living conditions and ensure better protection for them along the migration route. Many migrants fall victim to extortion, threats, ill-treatment, violence and smuggling of migrants. The meeting will take place at ministerial level and is expected to lead to the adoption of a joint declaration.                





Switzerland to Launch Hayat II project in Sohag city to improve the economic livelihood of 1,000 people

Cairo, Egypt – The Embassy of Switzerland, together with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), will launch “Hayat II” project on May 21 in Egypt’s Upper Egyptian city of Sohag, with the aim of boosting the economic livelihood of 1,000 people through providing them with training and income generating opportunities in the agricultural field.




Swiss Embassy celebrates the opening of Stoppelaëre´s house in Luxor

CAIRO – On February 17, Minister of Antiquities Khaled El Enany and Swiss Ambassador Markus Leitner, in the presence of Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, will open the fully restored Stoppelaëre´s house in Luxor, built in 1950 by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy for French conservator Alexandre Stoppelaëre.


Egypt’s Museum of Islamic Art opens this Week to the Public

CAIRO – The Museum of Islamic Art and Manuscript Museum of Dar El-Kotob opened this week to the public, following years of restoration work to repair damages by a January 2014 bomb attack in Cairo’s Bab El-Qhalq area. Switzerland contributed 550,000 Egyptian pounds ($78,000) (exchange rate of 2016) to the restoration work along with the bulk of the funds provided by the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
