While natural hazards are gender neutral, their impact is not. Individuals and communities are exposed and vulnerable to hazards to different extents. Gender is one of the factors that can have an influence on vulnerability and exposure to hazards. Though it is by far not the only one: Other factors can be age, the economic status, access to finances and services, educational level, ethnicity, religion, class, caste, disability or health status.

Previous studies, guidance notes, workshop guides etc. have already established that gender dynamics do have an influence on disaster risk management (DRM). The study will provide insights on how the dynamics play out in the context of Central Asian countries. It will be the first SDC study that will systematically look at the intersection of gender, DRR and CCA and the first such study focusing on the Central Asian region.
