The coup of March 2012 and the periods of conflict that ensued have revealed the deep-rooted fragility of Mali. Constantly adapting to the context, the SDC is pursuing its development support in the country to help achieve stabilisation, working in the areas of food security, education and local governance. Switzerland provides humanitarian aid to internally displaced people and expertise in reconciliation and peacebuilding.
In the volatile context specific to Mali, the approach of Swiss development cooperation is based on a conflict-sensitive project management method. This approach is proving successful. While other international donors have had no choice but to leave the country, Switzerland has always been able to continue its activities, adapting to the changing political and security context as it evolves.
The presidential election of 11 August 2013 marked the return to constitutional order in Mali. Switzerland is currently supporting the restoration of government institutions at national and local levels.
