Swiss relations with Paraguay are good but not particularly intensive. In 2017, Paraguay’s economy was among the most dynamic in Latin America.

Key aspects of diplomatic relations

Switzerland and Paraguay have signed agreements on trade, the protection of investments and technical cooperation.

Consular matters have been handled by the regional consular centre in Buenos Aires since July 2012. Since February 2016, following the closing of the Swiss embassy in Asunción, Switzerland's diplomatic interests have been represented by the Swiss ambassador based in Montevideo.

Cultural exchange

Switzerland takes part regularly in the Semaine de la Francophonie and the International Film Festival in Asunción.  A growing number of Swiss musicians and artists are performing and exhibiting their works in Paraguay.

At the end of 2017, there were environ 1,400 Swiss citizens living in Paraguay.

History of bilateral relations

Switzerland opened a consulate in Asunción in 1887 and the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1892. Switzerland opened an embassy in Asunción in 1968.

Since February 2016, following the closing of the embassy in Asunción, Switzerland's diplomatic interests have been represented by the Swiss embassy in Montevideo. An honorary consulate was opened in Asunción in 2016.
