DRC, Somalia Integrated Emergency Response (protection) 2015-16
Protecting civilians in armed conflicts and sustaining humanitarian access are key priorities for Switzerland. Through its support to the protection activities of the Integrated Emergency Response Programme implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in Somalia, Switzerland contributes to better protect vulnerable Somali women, men and children, focusing on internally displaced persons (lDP) and victims of abuse, destitution and gender based violence.

Contexte |
The number of lDPs in Somalia has reached the alarming figure of 1.3 million. This number is susceptible to increase due to the Yemen Crisis, continued fighting and the negative effects of the climate phenomenon El Nino. This multi-layered crisis is having a devastating impact on the livelihoods of women, men and children notably those living in appalling conditions in informal settlements. Further on, displaced populations are regularly confronted with forced evictions, harassments, gender based violence, food insecurity and diseases, with often little protection mechanism and system in place. |
Objectifs |
To enhance social support and protection mechanisms for the displaced and conflict affected women, men and children in Somalia, with a focus on prevention against, and response to, gender based violence. |
Groupes cibles |
42'000 women, men and children, with a focus on Internally Displaced Persons, GBV victims and deprived people living in informal settlements. |

Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: Principaux résultats antérieurs: Having supported DRC for almost 3 years in the frame of a mixed migration protection project in Puntland, Switzerland had the opportunity to verify DRC's effective ability to conduct protection related activities in the complex environment of Somalia. In Puntland, the organization has successfully managed to respond to support refugees, asylum seekers as well as migrants who were victims of violations. DRC significantly contributed to the strengthening of the protection mechanisms benefitting these target groups. |

Synergies are expected to take place between DRC, the Somali authorities, members of the Return Consortium, and OCHA. DRC is member of the Consortium forming the Somalia Resilience Programme (SomReP), the host agency of the Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat and an active member of the Somalia NGO Consortium. All 3 initiatives are supported by SOC. In addition to enhancing Switzerland's leverage in steering these ongoing initiatives, this contribution will give SOC an opportunity to strengthen the complementarity of the IER with other humanitarian/development responses in the region, ensure that good practises are shared and prevent duplication from taking place. |
