Caritas Belgium, Averting famines in South Sudan by supporting indigenous semi-commercial food production

Food insecurity in South Sudan remains distressingly widespread. Nationwide, some 41% of the population is severely food insecure as per FSMS report conducted in April 2015, and the IPC report released in May 2015 projected that 4.6 million people are facing severe food insecurity. Main causes are the ongoing conflict, the limited functioning markets, high food prices associated with rising inflation and depreciation of the local currency, diminishing purchasing power of most households, depletion of household stocks and depleted livelihood options. Caritas Belgium with its implementing partners intend to improve farming ability of rural farmers in the greenbelt area of Greater Equatoria through extension provision, market linkages and provision of appropriate technology to farmers group in order to improve production and reduce food insecurity. The greenbelt which is mostly the greater Equatoria region is extremely fertile, its population is exclusively made up of farmers and it is South Sudan’s most peaceful region.

The project in brief

Background	The current ongoing violent conflict in South Sudan remains unabated resulting to worsening economic and humanitarian situation. The IDP population has now grown to over 1.9 million people and the population continues to experience worsening food insecurity confirmed by the May 2015 IPC report that shows that 4.6 million people are facing severe food insecurity. There is hope to improve the situation in the Greater Equatoria greenbelt area with farmers who have access to land if support to improve production is provided.
Objectives	Averting imminent and future famines in South Sudan by supporting indigenous semi-commercial food production.
Target groups	Rural farmers in the greenbelt region of Equatoria, Direct beneficiaries: 6,720 (1,120 households), Male: 3,696, Female: 3,024
Medium-term outcomes	Increase marketable/marketed food production in South Sudans greenbelt areas.
Results	Expected results: 70 farmer groups boost their food production through increases in cropland, yield and additional harvests. 1120 farmer households improve their marketing through road access and facilitated market linkages, storage facilities and marketing information.
