Switzerland supports the Zanzibar Open Spaces project through its cultural programme

The cultural programme at the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania supported the second phase of the Zanzibar Open Spaces project which aims at preserving open spaces in Zanzibar town through sustainable urban design and high quality landscape architecture.

On September 10 2015, a closing event took place at the Department of Urban and Rural Planning (DoURP) offices in Stone Town, Zanzibar. Results of the phase were presented to Zanzibar Government officials, donors, potential investors and the public. Mr. Roland Radarschall from the Swiss Landscape Architecture Association (BSLA) presented detailed conceptual drawings and designs for one of the sites, Kibanda Maiti (also known as the Democracy Stadium). Phase II was intended for designing and creating a more detailed business plan for one of the four proposed sites from Phase I of the project. 

The initiative was started in 2014 by the DoURP, Government of Zanzibar together with BSLA and in close cooperation with the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF). The guest of honour was the Regional Commissioner of Zanzibar Urban West, Mr. Abdullah Mwinyi Khamis. Other key participants included the Regional Administrative Secretary Urban West Region, Mr. Juma Ali Simai; Dr. Muhammad Juma Muhammad, DoRUP Director and Ms. Nicole Boloney of BSLA.
