Switzerland-Uzbekistan: strengthening cooperation towards the development of water resources management

On August 16, 2016 the Intergovernmental Agreement between the Swiss Confederation and the Republic of Uzbekistan on National Water Resources Management Project was signed.

The project financed by the Swiss Confederation was developed jointly with the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, to be implemented between 2016 and 2018 for an amount of USD 2.7 million. The overall objective of the project is to promote integrated, transparent and needs-based water resources management, taking into account water-related disaster risks prevention and preparedness. The following outcomes will contribute to the overall goal:

  • Support to the Water Strategy elaboration and implementation of water legislation;
  • Strengthening of the institutional capacities of the water management agencies;
  • Establishment of a national Water Information System;
  • Enhancing of the Disaster Risk Management in the South Fergana.

The Intergovernmental Agreement was signed in Tashkent by Thierry Umbehr, Chargé d'affaires a.i. of the Swiss Embassy in Uzbekistan, and by Shavkat Khamraev, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Republic of Uzbekistan respectively on behalf of the two governments.
