Scaling up Nutrition Pooled Fund (SUN – Pooled Fund)

Sound nutrition relevant policies and strategies are a prerequisite to eliminate hunger and malnutrition. The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement brings together governments, civil society, donors, UN agencies, researchers and private sector actors to collaborate in support of countries to combat malnutrition. SDC participates in the SUN Pooled-Fund, which strengthens civil society engagement and multi-stakeholder platforms in the fight against malnutrition in the SUN countries.

The project in brief
Background Malnutrition is a rising global challenge, with 3 billion people across the globe having low quality diets. Nearly a quarter of all children less than five years are stunted (160 Mio), more than 2 billion people have insufficient micronutrients and overweight and obesity are growing challenges in every region of the world, affecting 1.9 billion people. As a result, economies are underperforming and diet-related chronic diseases are placing great demands on health care systems. The challenge is recognized and the world has committed with the Sustainable Development Goals to eradicate hunger and eliminate all forms of malnutrition by 2030.
Objectives

Contribute to end malnutrition in all its forms by collective action and the creation of an enabling environment to scale up nutrition plans in countries of the Movement.

In-country non-state stakeholders and parliamentarians are strengthened to participate in national multi-stakeholder platforms to implement scale up nutrition plans.
 
Target groups

Intermediate beneficiaries of the Pooled Fund are the civil society alliances and multi-stakeholder Platforms in the SUN countries.

Final beneficiaries are the governments and malnourished people in the SUN countries, who will benefit from more effective and targeted interventions and policies in the SUN countries.
Medium-term outcomes Outcome 1: SUN countries, including high burden and conflict affected nations, have national nutrition plans which are smart (Specific, Measurable, Action-Oriented, Realistic & Relevant, and Time-Bound).
Outcome 2: Additional SUN countries have enough finances available to fully implement their national nutrition plans
Outcome 3: Governments, civil society, UN agencies, Donors and Private sector are making a demonstrable contribution to reducing malnutrition.
Results

Expected results:  

  • New civil society alliances (CSA) are created in SUN countries (5). 
  • Existing CSA’s are strengthened to influence the implementation and results of national nutrition action plans (5)
  • CSA’s are well established and deliver their strategic plan at sub-national level (10).


Results from previous phases:  

  • 24 Civil Society Alliances (CSA) in SUN countries were newly formed
  • 26 CSA engage in national mutli-stakeholder platforms, leading to various results like a) Revision of the health policy in Kenya, strongly including nutrition, b) New law in Kyrgyzstan on flour fortification, c) Promoting breastfeeding in hospitals in Nepal
