The Climate Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia project strengthens national and regional organisations responsible for water resource management in Central Asia to implement climate-sensitive integrated water resources management in a regionally coordinated manner. Switzerland will contribute to this initiative which is designed in the frame of the German led, GIZ implemented Green Central Asia High-Level Platform.
Rural Communities’ Disaster Risks and Climate Change Resilience (Phase 2)

In the natural disasters prone Kyrgyzstan, most vulnerable are the rural communities. Within its periodic Country Strategic Plans, the UN World Food Programme strengthens their disaster risk reduction capacities and climate change resilience. Switzerland has been successfully supporting these endeavours in 2022, supporting resilience and food security of the most vulnerable communities and extends the support to the same direction for 2023-2027.
Improving Community Resilience through Sustainable Livelihoods in the Rasht Valley, Tajikistan

The contribution to the Aga Khan Foundation project aims at improving the resilience of livelihoods of the remote rural communities of Rasht valley, vulnerable to climate change. The local population will get equitable access to water and sanitation and childcare services. The population and particularly women will get income generation opportunities and engage in management, regeneration and protection of their natural resources while adopting disaster risk reduction measures and practices.

The proposal will develop an evidence-based roadmap for sustainable pasture ecosystems management, addressing livestock issues from local to market levels. It will support the development of a future project benefitting small holders and communities through higher pasture productivity and decreased vulnerability to natural hazards. This will improve livestock health and preserve its value as capital assets.
Adaptive and Resilient Communities in their Habitat (ARCH)

The project aims at supporting the remote mountainous communities of Pamirs and authorities in developing resilient habitat and improving people's livelihoods in Tajikistan. Climate Resilient Integrated Water Resources Management in the Zarafshan River Basin in Uzbekistan

In the frame of its Country Strategic Plans (CSP), the World Food Programme (WFP) strengthens their disaster risk and climate change resilience. The Swiss contribution to this intervention line/pillar of the CSP will magnify its impact via implementing a more comprehensive approach and increasing the number of direct beneficiaries.

The project is providing efficient weather, water and climate services for the rural population of Tajikistan, especially those highly vulnerable to climate change, and it will contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods and resilience. As a result, people in the project area will use accurate/timely forecasts and improve agricultural productivity, hence guarantee food security, effectively manage irrigation water and reduce vulnerability to hazards.

Climate change in Central Asia mountain regions will have significant impacts on water availability and occurrence of natural hazards. This project strengthens the glacier, snow and permafrost monitoring systems and capacities in Central Asia, develops user-oriented climate information services, and supports the planning of adaptation measures to increase resilience to climate change. The project builds on Swiss expertise in monitoring and adaptation in alpine water and disaster risk management.

ACTED Earthquake response in Chong-Alai region

To complement and complete the efforts supported by Switzerland in the immediate aftermath of earthquakes in remote Chong-Alai region in May 2017, the project's Phase 2 will provide shelter construction assistance to the remaining vulnerable earthquake-affected households that were unable to re-build their houses. The assistance will be in the form of distribution of construction materials to the remaining affected households and provision of technical assistance on affordable and replicable earthquake-safe construction techniques.

Rasht Valley is the most neglected and fragile region in Tajikistan - the poorest country of the former Soviet Union republics. The region marked by a sluggish transition and fragility patterns – remnants of the Civil War in the country. This project will improve quality of living conditions of Rasht Valley’s population by increasing access to better quality drinking water, sanitation and healthcare services, as well as strengthening resilience of communities to the impact of natural hazards.
